The Official 2010 "I Hate VD" Thread

I made my fiance dinner last year for Vday because we were short on cash and we had a nice night in.

I don't think there is reason to hate it necessarily. You're not obligated to buy the flowers and chocolates, but taking the day to reflect on all the kinds of love in your life -- family, friends, lovers, whoever -- isn't such a bad thing IMO. wub.gif

The commercialism of the holiday has made people very bitter -- the singles feel left out and the coupled people feel they HAVE to spend oodles of money on their sig. other, all because Russell Stover says so! Almost every holiday is associated with spending money on complete crap -- Christmas is about buying gifts and Santa, shit, even Fourth of July -- our nation's birthday -- is centered around beer and BBQ! It's all about how you decide to spend the holidays minus the gimmicks.

I'm fortunate that I have a wife who's a bit non-traditional. When we first started dating seriously we learned that neither one of us is big on chocolates and flowers are nice, but we think they're a waste since they don't last. So we decided that we'd just buy each other a small gift ($25 dollar limit) every year. I usually get her a CD or two (because there's always at least one new one out that she wants) and a card, and she likes to get me cool gadgets because I'm a huge gadget nut. Last year she got me a screwdriver with changeable bits and a built-in light and despite of the fact that I have umpteen thousand different screwdrivers it's the one I use the most.

A screwdriver with a light? *sound of Mara's ears perking up in interest*

laugh.gif Home Depot has 'em! Lighted screwdriver. The handle is also cushioned so it's really comfortable to use.

This girl's friend killed herself on VD:

That's very uncommon. Suicide rates are higher at Xmas than any other time of year. I thought I was the only one who called it that--VD.

Its not all that bad guy's. Just depends on how and who you celebrate it with! heart.gif biggrin.gif

I gotta go with troutman on this one. My BF and I normally just go out for a nice dinner. I ask him not to give me any gifts, but he chooses to do so...not because he feels like it's an obligation.

wub.gif Mara, you rock!

Glad you like! wub.gif (I was trying to find an eloquent yet funny term for that bit of anatomy, and it just occurred to me. "Fudge tunnel! You never hear anyone use the term 'fudge tunnel'!")

My wife and I are are a very tight budget these days and we don't stray from taking care of important stuff to spend on something that's not really a priority to us. I'm not knocking it however, there is nothing wrong with romance and doing something special for someone you love.

In our case however we do these things throughout the year in our own timing.

Life has priorities, and for us personally, Valentines day is not one of them anymore. I do make a nice dinner every year and we are thankful that we have each other, for better or worse.

"Fudge tunnel" is certainly appropriate for Valentine's Day. laugh.gif

I'm not a big fan of V. Day, either. It may have started out with good intentions (kind of like Christmas, which incidentally I loathe anymore!), but became a big over-blown, manufactured, emotional mind-f**k that causes more trouble than good, imo. I'm trying to enjoy it, though, for my girls. They have fun with it. And, we're doing a lot of goofy stuff at work to celebrate it. But, it's still not my fav.

I don't mind getting my wife something nice for VD...but I'm running out of ideas on stuff to get her. I'll probably just pick up some flowers I guess. eh.gif

Supply and demand, plus just a bit of opportunism. I don't begrudge that, though. Florists need to make a profit, too.

I really don't get all the hatred and stress over this day.

For those who think it's just a holiday for women well men have Steak and BJ Day on March 14th... would you rather we scrap both? tongue.gif

What's so wrong about picking a day in your busy life to show the people who you care about a lil extra attention and adoration? I'm not one of those people who puts these high expectations on their boyfriends or who breaks the bank when giving gifts. Cause that's a different issue entirely. But having a day to remind someone how much they mean to you... even if it's just a friend who needs a lil cheering up... I don't see how giving them a card or some candy is so wrong.

Just my opinion.

Sneak over into your neighbor's yard when they aren't home and raid their flower bed. wink.gif Selection is limited due to the fact it's winter, but hey, it's free.

first of all, left hand. duh eyesre4.gif .

second, i'm actually not going to be single THIS valentine's day. I just have been for the past seventeen you i'm pretty familiar with the experience and it's not as bad as people make it out to be. i believe i've already expressed my views on the concept of the day itself, don't need to reiterate myself there.

Exactly.

Those who celebrate anniversaries take the extra day to remember their wedding day (or day of getting together). Valentines day truly can -- and should -- be for all forms of love.

I remember seeing a Dear Abby post a few years ago that gave information about sending Valentines to soldiers in Iraq. That's a nice, *alternative* Valentines day touch.
