Just because it's on the bottom of the list doesn't mean ya hate the album.

I hate the one at the bottom of my list, but it's the only one I outright "hate."

same here.

As far as I'm concerned, Neil is only 33% of the band. Rush made good music even before he joined. My opinion of course.

Vocals - Geddy

Bass - Geddy

Guitars - Alex

Drums/Percussion - Neil

Songwriting - Neil

Seems to me that Neil is 40% of the band (2/5). confused13.gif

Why is there no love for the 1st album here?  wacko.gif confused13.gif

I don't get the hate for this album either - it rocks and it's awesome. yes.gif 1022.gif 2.gif

Maybe, but it doesn't really have the qualities for why we love Rush. It's like a different band.

I'd listen to Roll the Bones over it any day.

I have it at #12. If it had Neil's drumming on it I'd have it around 6.

For the type of music it is, which is just ass-kicking rock and roll, I think Rutsey does a great job. It's only because Neil Peart is the best drummer in rock music that people put Rutsey down imho - ANYONE is going to suffer by comparison. Still, I love that album. Sure you can say that it would have been even better musically if Peart was drumming, but then again if he was with the band, that album would have been totally different and wouldn't exist as it does.

I have Presto at #8 on my list, so I'd have to disagree with that. I also have TFE at #11.

But HYF, VT and RTB are in my bottom 4 anyway, so no problems there.

RTB, and especially VT, aren't fit to wipe HYF's butt. no.gif

sd's tiered rating style was interesting (although I added another 'tier) - and of course, I didn't agree with the rankings wink.gif - therefore:

Perfect

Signals

Moving Pictures

Permanent Waves

Almost Perfect

Caress of Steel

Grace Under Pressure

Power Windows

Vapor Trails

Pretty Damn Good

Rush

Fly By Night

AFTK

Hemispheres

Hold Your Fire

Presto

Counterparts

Not Quite Their Best

Test For Echo

Snakes And Arrows

Almost Garbage

2112 (excepting Something For Nothing and Lessons, which are basically two FBN-like 'leftovers', this is the most bloated and over-rated album of their career - taking the blues and the soul out of Caress Of Steel was a silly move, and they knew it - as proof, they changed directions immediately [see AFTK, Hemispheres, etc]

Roll The Bones (Dreamline and Ghost Of A Chance save this one from the 'toss' pile... just)

Feedback (rip Crossroads to a pc and get rid of it)

At least with Feedback I can listen to the whole thing, even though I rarely choose to...

Not listening to albums beginning to end has never been a problem for me.

From a very young age, I was interested in making mix-tapes, recording and so on (I'm a performing and recording musician with a recording studio as an adult).

I've always found it enjoyable to impose my own editing to albums that haven't met my 'standards' - ultimately, I'm left with nothing but the best... how can I lose?

I've been listening to Rush since 1980, and a diehard fan since 1982 (Signals broke my world wide open).

HYF was the first Rush record for me that included 'filler' material. Here was music on a Rush album that - for the first time - felt like it was included because they had the space available, not because they were 100% behind it (Second Nature, Tai Shan, High Water all would've been scrapped from a 'traditional' length album.)

From then on, Rush (to date) has never again released an album without some 'filler'. However, there seemed to always be some fantastic music within these records, regardless of how long the overall playing time continued to grow.

By the time Presto was released, I had begun to edit/combine albums to more personally reflect what I thought were Rush's continuing strengths.

Presto & RTB became one fantastic album:

Dreamline

Chain Lightning

The Pass

Scars

Bravado

GOAC

Hand Over Fist

Show Don't Tell

Available Light

Counterparts & T4E were consolidated similarly:

Stick It Out

Driven

Cut To The Chase

Alien Shore

Totem

Time & Motion

Double Agent

Test For Echo

Vapor Trails was that rare exception - with just 15 minutes trimmed from it (CU, How It Is, OOTC) it's near-perfect. Exceptionally stunning and gratifying, considering the 16 years of releases that had preceded it.

But with S&A we were back to Rush's 'golden ratio' - at 30 to 40 minutes, they seem to achieve near-perfect collections of music (PeW, MP, Sig, p/g) . Any longer, and they almost uniformly succumb to a disappointing pop-rock mediocrity (I always hoped we'd get more instrumentals, jams and truly experimental chances given an 80 minute format - the proof is obvious that Rush are far too careful and insecure for such 'reckless' behavior.)

"Far Cry" 5:18

"Armor and Sword" 6:40

"Spindrift" 5:23

"The Way the Wind Blows" 6:28

"Bravest Face" 5:11

"Malignant Narcissism" 2:15

"We Hold On" 4:11

- that's about 35 minutes. Right on the money.

No filler. No sleepy, middle-of-the-road AOR time-wasters. No formulaic verse/chorus/verse style instrumentals (do none of them remember LVS?)

Even so, 27 years after my Signals 'awakening', after all that's been released since then, I'm still excited at the news that Rush are considering heading into the studio. Soon.

New Rush music. The prospect of new Rush music.

It gets the adrenaline moving, even now.

Yeah, I could have easily put the debut up a little higher, above VT, RTB, and Presto.

I actually "rediscovered" and became quite obsessed with the debut a while back. smile.gif I'm pretty sure it was the debut that caused me to finally get a Les Paul after years of playing Strats.

There is a definite charm to the debut, with the creamy Les Paul tones (still some of Alex's best) and the blues rock/Cream vibe. The only thing that knocks it down a bit for me are the lyrics tongue.gif and a couple of weak tracks (Here Again, Before and After).
