Your Top Fifteen (15) Metal bands of All Time?

Recommended Posts

I want to know if there is some sorta concensus on who are the Top Fifteen (15) Metal bands of All Time. I was going to say, Top Ten Hard Rock/Heavy Metal...but, I'm not gonna swing down that particular corridor. That's too broad a term, and not enough selections allotted. Ten is too few a number, and Twenty is to large to discern anything from the results. When you consider just how many amazing Metal bands there are out there, the task is quite difficult.

So, I ask you - - Which groups are the Top Fifteen Metal bands of All Time? You can use your own knowledge of what the term 'Heavy Metal' means to you when comprising your list of Fifteen bands. There have been quite a number of 'borderline' bands who are acceptable to some folks and not acceptable to others when considering which groups fall underneath that umbrella term - 'Heavy Metal'.

Bands like Guns n' Roses, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Rage Against The Machine, Kiss, Deep Purple, Creed are the type and range of bands which might be considered as 'borderline' groups. You can include them if you like them enough, PLUS, feel that they truly encompass the term. Three of my selections were choosen because they best represent a whole sub-genre of Metal that I really like.

And, your list of bands doesn't necessarily need to be in any specific order. The more you like the genre of Metal, the more difficult it will be for you to cull the herd down to only 15 selections. Try to be objective. Which groups do you think are the 'best' 15? Inevitably, you will have to cull some key selections and leave out some definite favs.

If we get enough lists from users here, maybe later we can see if we're able to put the users' favourites in some type of numerical order.

Everyone...give it some serious thought. Like I said above, if you really like Metal, the task will be even more difficult. But, you can save some spots by picking bands which really encapsulates an entire sub-genre of Metal.

I picked the band 'Death', because I have a taste for the sub-genre of Progressive/Technical Death Metal. I wanted to name Death, Cynic, Athesit, maybe even a newer outfit like Obscura...But, I only had 15 total selections, so I gave it to 'Death'...because they represent the best of that specific sub-genre.

Mastodon best represents the best of the Progressive Sludge Metal that I'm crazy about at present. In all honesty, I like Mastodon just as much as Baroness, Giant Squid, Pelican, The Ocean and a few others. But, I can't mention them all here. Same basic concept goes for my Candlemass selection. I would have liked to name a few Doom Metal bands. But, I went for the biggest and best.

I really could have said 'Black Sabbath' and then left out both Ozzy and Dio to save some more space. But, since Sabbath, Ozzy and DIO are probably the groups I've heard the most of throughout the years, I had to give extra props to them.

Good job so far, guys. I had to sacrifice quite a number of the bands that you guys selected. If a ton of people here list their own 15, then we'll be able to come up with an 'Average' Fifteen. But, I'm pretty sure that most of us already know who would make that list.

I really liked when VH1 did the 100 Best Artists of Hard Rock/Heavy Metal. Even with 100 slots, they still left out some important names. I agreed with close to 75% of what made that list. I would have ousted the other 25 names and subsituted in some real deserving bands.
