rushgoober
ok, I must admit there are tons of sci-fi movies I haven't seen, especially movies that are prior to the late 60's, so my list is skewed from the late 60's to the present. i'm sure others will list more classics from yesteryear. anyway, here's my top 10 fave sci-fi movies (order subject to change, but this is roughly it): 1. GeddyRulz
Star Wars: Original Trilogy The Terminator Alien/Aliens Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home Planet of the Apes (original) Logan's Run Close Encounters of the Third Kind Star Wars: The Prequels E.T. Back to the Future Blade Runner That's eleven, and even then I had to cheat - putting all 6 SW films into two entries, and adding Alien and Aliens together. Kill me. The original Star Wars movie (1977) is far and away my favorite SciFi film, and favorite ALL TIME favorite film IN ANY GENRE.

How can anyone not think of Star Wars as science-fiction? From dictionary.com: science fiction n. A literary or cinematic genre in which fantasy, typically based on speculative scientific discoveries or developments, environmental changes, space travel, or life on other planets, forms part of the plot or background. I'd say because the science plays a very small part in it all, other than adding coolness. It certainly is sci-fi because of the "technology" that's included, but the fantasy is by far the bulk of the story (the force, the family story, the reliance on wierd creatures, the good vs. evil themes). Does it really make you think about "what if..."?

Excellent. A few holes in the plot, but I've always loved this movie. Malcolm McDowell and Mary Steenburgen fell in love and married after working together in this movie. Normally I'm not a Steenburgen fan - I think she usually sucks as an actress - but she does well here. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/1b/TimeAfterTime79.jpg Edited May 26, 2009 by GeddyRulz

Jack Aubrey
I think that 'Blade Runner' is absolutely the best science fiction movie ever made. All good science fiction explores the question: "what does it mean to be human?" And 'Blade Runner' does that with a vengeance in so many different ways. Seriously, if it's not your number one choice then you need to re-watch it, perhaps even twice.

Dick's stories, one of its themes is "What is the nature and function of memory?" And like the best Science Fiction, it really makes you think. I have to agree, it's a great movie. But I disagree with your belief that Decker is a replicant; if he were, then some of the philosophical depth of the film would be lost.

Jack Aubrey
We went out of town to visit relatives this weekend. I brought my copy of 'Blade Runner' with me because my Aunt Jackie had never seen it and she loves movies like it (she introduced me to 'Clockwork Orange' when I was 19 and I always try to return the favor by introducing her to movies that I love and I was rewarded by the fact that she loved it, she even said that she'd never liked Rutger Hauer but his performance as Batty made her re-think him as an actor). After we watched it she asked me if Deckard was a replicant and we discussed why I thought he was. She basically agreed, saying she got the feeling that he was about halfway through the movie. I did, though, come up with an counter argument for my "he has to be a replicant because it would take one to catch one" assertion. We learn in Deckard's first meeting with Bryant that the replicants were "developing their own emotional responses" so if you follow that, you can come to the conclusion that one of the emotions Batty was feeling was guilt, which could have led to his getting caught because he knew he had done wrong and needed to be punished for it. That is, after all, how most criminals are caught - their guilt makes them slip up on some level which usually leads to their capture. Now I still think Deckard was a replicant, but it is something to at least consider. By the way, GR, have you seen Ridley Scott's final cut of 'Blade Runner'? If you haven't, then please watch it at the earliest opportunity because it's so much better than any of the other versions.
