I'm listening to Close To The Edge and am tempted to think that this song might just be the best song ever. I'm wondering how it was even written? The beginning of the song appears to sound like a cacophony of instruments playing independently in opposite directions from the others, but it all comes together. Actually, I am in awe of what the human mind and a musical gift can produce.

How I would have loved to be in the studio with them when they were recording it. Where I really would have liked to have been was in the control room with their engineer.

That pipe organ! If that doesn't give everyone the chills, nothing ever will.

The opening montage of sound was Jon's idea, and it consisted of many, many overdubbed sounds. The song was essentially written in the studio, in their painfully diplomatic style. Their drummer, Bill Bruford, said they had heard that it took Simon and Garfunkel three months to record the Bridge Over Troubled Water album, so they were determined that this album would take three months and a day.

Anderson said of the pipe organ sequence and what followed was that the organ represented the Church. The Moog then came in and destroyed the Church, and then the Hammond organ solo that followed was the foundation of a new Church.

I also read that they had to keep breaking down their gear to go do gigs all over England. So they'd record a few bars, go play a gig, and then have to set their gear up all over again. This led to slight differences in how the instruments sounded throughout the song. You can hear it on Squire's bass part during the two choruses. Listen to it when when Jon is singing "Crossed the line around the changes of the summer, and then again during the, "Sudden cause shouldn't take away the startled memory." Its the same bass line, same key, but the bass sound in the first chorus is deeper, fatter, rounder. On the second chorus, it doesn't have nearly the punch or depth.

Sheldon, you're right. As usual. ;) ;)

What a song. Nothing today comes close.

Hard for me to believe, as I listen to Close To The Edge, that it came out so long ago. I was 18. It doesn't sound dated at all. Me, on the other hand.....

Dunno, bet you've been dated plenty of times.

The album's fantastic and really takes me back to a time that seemed magical. This album, Selling England By The Pound and, believe it or not, Caress Of Steel really remind me of my teenage years and the specialness of discovering new music.

That's just it. The music is special enough, but each of the three songs on the album remind me of someone different from that time in my life. Hearing the album brings me right back to 1972.

When looking for performances of songs, make sure to filter the results for your convenience. Add "-2012" "-2013" etc

Example:

https://www.youtube....012 -2013 -2014

edit: never mind, adding (eg) "-2012" actually filters out all the videos uploaded in 2012 rather than just taking "2012" out of the description / titles of the videos. I should just edit this post into junk, but to be honest, I'm disappointed. Add another reason to list of "Why Youtube Sucks"...

I totally believe it, re COS. Fantastic album.. I remember getting lost in this album when I was a kid. A top 5 Rush record for me.

I love everything about Gates of Delirium. That solo section is outstanding, I remember when walking in and through high school every morning I'd listen to that part on repeat.

...Now I do listen to the song in it's entirety

When I was in 11th grade, I had a a little Ritual involving Relayer. Every morning before I left my house to walk to the bus stop, I'd put my Walkman headphones on, and press play as I stepped out the door. Gates of Delerium would start, and it would finish just as I was getting off the bus to walk in to school. In the afternoon, when the bus started rolling, I'd play side two. Since it was shorter, it wouldn't last my whole walk home.

:haz:

Cool story...did the same with my walkman countless times... the good old days!

They're playing at a casino nearby. Are they even worth it without Wakeman & Anderson?

NO :finbar:

YES!

What else are you going to do? Sit home and watch TV? The ticket prices aren't bad. Go see Yes!

Nah, I decided against it. They're 100 miles away, cost $70 and don't even have Jon Anderson. I'll pass for now.

I saw them live with Benoit and it was a major disappointment. Didnt even stay for roundabout (not that that's one of my faves anyway, but if Jon was there id def stay)

The only reason why i dont regret going entirely is because steve howe's playing in "And You and I" did reach me, and that was a good moment.

The Benoit tour was rough...the show I saw was lazy and his vocals (as well as the playing of alan, in particular) were sub par.

However, Jon seems to have them truly rejuvenated. Saw them two tours ago (right before the 3 album tour) and the show was great - very satisfying. Looking forward to seeing them again next summer and hearing the new album.

PS-- a new song from H&E, "Believe Again" has been circulating. Its quite a nice piece of Yes Music.

Me with YES 2004 ( w/ Rick's hand on my shoulder )

I spent most of my time with Rick as we spoke a lot about The Strawbs and Six Wives. Jon was very open to talking as well. The others, not so much.

Eh, I'm in the camp that's never "gotten" Gates of Delirium. It's a pretty good song and all, but it's one of those songs where I only really like certain sections of it instead of the whole thing.

Now, the mid-section when it gets all quiet and then Jon starts singing and things get kicked up a notch? That always gets me.

Yeah, that section is particularly strong in the Yesshows version of the song.

I like just about every aspect of Gates, especially the little melodies at the beginning, Jon's vocals in the first third, and Moraz's keys during the battle segment (Moraz was a real hero on Relayer). Soon is actually the part I enjoy listening to the least, but it's the perfect way to cap things off.

I lost YES after Relayer. Never got into GFTO, Tormato, etc. I did like Big Generator. Fish out of Water and Olias are fantastic !!!

You're doing yourself a disservice, revisit and re-evaluate immediately! Relayer > GFTO > Tormato :)

I rank Going for the One a bit higher than Relayer, as I find it more consistent, but yeah, all three of those are good records.

Tormato is a MENTAL record. So many barking f***ing nuts moments. LOVE IT.

WB, I missed you. Has its moments alright.

Hey Steevo! Missed you guys. Slowly coming back to life, TRF-wise.

I was at this show at MSG and the crowd would even let YES finish "And You and I". Check this out.

Cot damn, sons!

I heard about this show, but hadn't seen it until now.

You folks here are very impressive! I didn't live a sheltered life by any means, but how did some of you manage stuff like this? I'd give almost anything today to sit down with an old rocker from my time and talk about music.

Was the entire album Close To The Edge ever done well (and I emphasize the word well) in concert? If so, is it on a DVD That I can purchase? It would make a nice birthday gift to myself.

YESSONGS, but the DVD version doesn't include Siberian Khatru :( In fact, it includes an unsatisfying amount of songs. But for all it's briefness (for Yes/Prog), it's probably their best. The songs aren't in order either btw.

How could they omit that song?

Is there another concert video that would include all of the songs from Close To The Edge? Why, oh why, didn't I go see them back then? Sometimes I wonder where my head was at in the seventies.

My backstage pass from 2007 ( still stuck to one of my YES shirts). My buddy works for Letterman and got these backstage passes. I saw the entire show backstage.

That would be a dream come true for me - one of the "Access All Areas" things around the neck. I would love to watch a concert standing on the side of the stage.
