The "Official" Yes thread

Hopefully he was able to fix Squire's bass in the second verse of CttE. In the first verse, the bass was deep, full, and rich, even snappy. But it is muffled in the second chorus, almost thin sounding, and not as loud. And he's playing the same thing in the same key. I know it had to do with them constantly tearing down their stuff to go play gigs, and then setting it back up, and trying to get the same sound as before. Every time that album was remastered, I'd hoped that was fixed, but it never was.

I'm always reluctant to keep getting reissues of the same stuff, but the Steve Wilson versions of the King Crimson albums are the last ones you'll ever need (or at least the last ones I'll ever need). He convinced Robert Fripp to include a modern remix using today's best methods and those sound great. Of course not everyone wants a new remix so all the KC albums also include the 30th anniversary mixes as well as a 5.1 surround mix and a vinyl rip from the original pressings. Also included were any single edits and several outtakes and alternate versions as well as videos and just about any rarity you can imagine. I see that he is now going to do this with the Yes albums so I say bring it on. Sid Smith also wrote liner notes for those KC albums and here he is doing now for the Yes albums. They'll be expensive, but I think these new releases will be about as definitive as they can ever get. I think I can finally see an end to my obsessive collecting and collating and backing up of some of my favorite bands. I'll need a new hobby in a few years.

Not sure I need a 6th copy of this.

f**k it, I do.

I have the original remasters plus UK/US original vinyl in great condition. That's good enough for me. I have many other reissues lined up that deserve more attention for now. No way.

Dagnabit they're playing the Ryman Auditorium again in Nashville. Sure it's an historic venue, but it began life as a church and the seating is on pews that they overstuff. You will get to know your neighbor's thigh at a show there.

I would like to see them again just for Steve Howe alone and I have heard good things about the new singer and I would really like Jon Anderson to return and he may never so this might be very near the last chance and oh heck maybe I'll just travel somewhere to see the show.

Well it's 2014 and I just saw Yes last night for the first time in my life!

I didn't even realize they were coming here until yesterday so I go down to the box office at the venue and the young guy behind the counter comments on my Rush hoody and offers me his two tickets for the price of a single ticket because he couldn't go! And this was 10 minutes before he was off work! So I Rushed to the ATM and grabbed the tickets, 10th row centre on the floor! Miracles can happen people! :D

The show was good! Howe was amazing considering he must be in his 70's by now.. And Jon Davidson is the closest you can get to Anderson, he was great! Squire's bass could've been a little meaner in the mix but it was there. I'd say it's worth going if you're a Yes fan!

At one point Howe reminded us that their very first show in North America was right here in Edmonton Alberta back in '71.. Then an old long haired guy in the first row yells out "I was there!!" The band was equally amazed and impressed by that! Priceless!

If I had to complain about something it would be that they changed a few minor parts in some songs (I'm nit-picking here, but hey I have 'Rush-fan' standards). Plus, songs like 'Yours is no Disgrace' (my favorite Yes tune!) didn't really ROCK quite as hard as they should but what can you expect. All in all it was a fantastic show! :)

They're playing at a casino nearby. Are they even worth it without Wakeman & Anderson?

NO :finbar:

well most of you have been going to shows since 1973 and if you've already seen yes in their prime, you'll probably be disappointed (same way folks who saw rush in 77 typically aren't too impressed by recent rush gigs) but I saw them in 2012 and 2013 and I thought they were killer, all things considered. they sound the same as they always have, geoff downes will sometimes f**k up something but other than that they put on a damn good show. the new singer sounds fine, I never saw em with anderson anyway so I don't have anything to compare it to.

I'm just discovering this amazing band! Can anyone suggest the best album,or albums to start with?

Close To The Edge

The Yes Album

Going For The One

Tormato

are my favorite 70's Yes studio recordings. Outstanding all of them. Yessongs is an awesome live recording that covers their very early stuff. There are other members here that are more expert on their post 1980 stuff. I know some of it and like some but I wouldn't consider myself expert on it. Hope this helps some.... :)

Those are all excellent albums. I'd suggest getting them in the following order:

1. The Yes Album & Fragile - Two early classics, together they include most of the band's classic 10-minute-ish long songs. And Fragile has "Roundabout," which admittedly I've heard a lot in my many decades of Yesfandom, but I still remember the first time I heard the organ arpeggios over the chorus, and it still sends chills up my spine to think of it. :)

2. Close To The Edge - Possibly their greatest album. My favourite. Their first excursion into a side length song.

3. Going For The One - Skips over two mid-70's albums, Tales From Topographic Oceans and Relayer. Don't get me wrong, I love them both, and they are among my favourite work by the band, but compared to the albums on this list they are pretty challenging. It took me a long time to deeply appreciate both, let alone even understand them. GFTO is a lot easier to digest, with a number of concise (for them) songs and the awe-inspiring 17 minute classic, "Awaken."

Enjoy! They are an exciting band to discover.

Well said. I guess a lot of folks just don't love Tormato like I do.... :)
