Is it bad that I laughed my ass off when watching 300?

No, it isn't. If they were being serious in that movie, then it failed, utterly. It was ridiculous! Sure, it was visually impressive, and appealed very much to the sadist in me, but all it was doing was compensating for a somewhat minimal storyline.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it greatly; it just wasn't the masterpiece everyone was making it out to be.

Yes, I must agree. It was visually impressive, but storywise it seemed to lack some depth. It basically delivered what it was, a graphic novel come to life. I wish they would have delved into the Persian empire a bit more for a bit of a back story on Xerxes, or at least a general history of the Spartan's enemies. Worth checking out on the big screen for sure though.

I haven't enjoyed myself in a movie this much since I saw "The Toxic Avenger" years ago. Well done!

Prior to the show, there was a trailer for the new Tarintino/Rodriguez double bill coming out in a few weeks. Looks good!

oh yea... why do people bring 4 and 5 year old children to R rated movies? Especially ones as graphically violent as 300.

I saw it last night. It was everything I expected it to be. My wife liked it, too!

This movie was "better than porn" according to one friend and I tend to agree. I saw it opening night in a normal theater and last thursday in IMAX. IMAX was freaking amazing. The sound...everything.

So many good lines in that movie as well.

"Immortals...we put their name to the test"

The coolest part of this movie is that if you've ever studied the battle of Thermopylae in-depth, you'll realise that aside from a few minor plot elements and of course the giant incredible-hulk type creatures, this movie is almost dead-on for accuracy.

You should really check out the wikipedia page about Thermopylae, its quite interesting.

The other thing that I loved about this movie is that many of the lines they say are historical as well. Among some of the lines pulled straight from history are:

"Our arrows will blot out the sun"

"then we will fight in the shade"

and

"Earth and water. You'll find plenty of both down there" (both the Spartans and the Athenians said something similar and threw the messengers into pits)

There are others, but I can't think of them right now.

If you haven't read 'Watchmen', I urge you to check it out.

Yes, it's a comic book, and I originally had a chip on my shoulder about it. My brother-in-law was the one who talked me into reading it. He said: "I know you and I know your tastes, you'll love it." He was right. The comic was written by the same guy who wrote 'V For Vendetta' and 'The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen'.

Here's a link to read about it: 'Watchmen'. I think I'll break out my copy and read it again.

I read Watchmen back in the 80's. I agree, it was great.

As for 300 -- haven't seen it yet, but I plan on doing so. From what I have heard/read about it, it is poor history but great entertainment, which sounds about right for a Hollywood historical flick.

Actually, as I said despite some blatant differences, it's quite close historically.

Uh, no.

From start to finish (saw it yesterday), it was highly innaccurate as an historical account. But that's okay -- it doesn't claim to be accurate history in the first place. It is just a superhero/supervillain comic book brought to the Big Screen, very loosely based on a real historical event.

It is "accurate" only in the vaguest sense -- insofar as 300 Spartans under King Leonidas and a lot more other Greeks temporarily held up a massive army under the Persian emperor Xerxes at the pass of Thermopylae before the Persians were shown a path to get around behind them. That's about it. Most of the rest of the movie is hollywood invention and/or distortion.

My own impression of the movie is along the lines you guys mention here.

I wasn't laughing, but I was rolling my eyes a lot. At times, I got the feeling I was watching a fantasy movie like Lord of the Rings (with all the freakish trollish and orc like monsters and Xerxes as some sort of massive evil overlord) instead of a "historical" movie.

It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't all that good either, imo. Frankly, I was glad when the damned thing finally ended.

Sure, if you are looking for a pure mindless action flick with lots of fighting and blood, this movie is awesome. Otherwise, not.

That's exactly what it was and what it was intended to be by its creators. I'm not sure why one would look at is as a "serious" historical movie? I don't think I've laughed as much or enjoyed myself in a movie in a long time. I'm not sure, but I think you didn't have the correct mindset going into the movie.

That's exactly right, I didn't.

I was taking way too seriously some comments about how it was an accurate historical flick.

Far better to approach this movie as a comic book superhero/supervillain flick.
