alright, i've decided as huge of a movie buff as I am, i am not familiar with nearly enough of the really old classics, like the black and white stuff from like the 30's on up, and maybe even earlier.

i've decided i really wanna start watching a bunch of old movies, that is, if i can get my hands on them. i already know that these are ones that i have to see:

Psycho

Citizen Kane

The Manchurian Candidate

Casablanca

i'm sure i could think of some others that i've heard of but those are the main ones i'm thinking of now. what are some other must see black and whites that you guys could recommend me?

i'm also up for recommendations on some of the earlier color movies, like 60's or even earlier 70's, cuz i haven't seen as many of those as i'd like to have seen either.

It's a Wonderful Life

A Christmas Carol(1951? Alastair Sim as Scrooge) Still one of the best versions.

George C Scott played a terrific Scrooge also.

Movies with Jimmy Stewart:

Harvey - A classic and fun movie

The Philidelphia Story - Also hysterical with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn

Another good comedy:

Born Yesterday - William Holden and Judy Holiday

Just one of my favs:

Stalag 17 - Another classic with William Holden

Any of these are good choices!

Try the old movie called "Them" from the early 50's. It's about giant mutant ants that run amok until the US military steps in and destroys them.

I'm sure it's a cult classic somewhere.

I don't know where you are located but my wife and I use netflix and have been able to get most of the classic movies that we love so much. You may want to try that if its available where you live. Most of the movies listed in this thread are available through netflix.

The Odd Couple was in colour, great film though...

What about White Heat, Key Largo, Some like it Hot, Cape Fear, School for Scoundrels (original version) any of the Laurel and Hardy films, Peter Sellers stuff like: Dr Strangelove, Two Way Stretch, I'm alright Jack...

Raging Bull, Robert De Niro. Don't know if anyone mentioned it yet but it's definitely a black and white classic.
