I picked mystery, although I do read "plain" old fiction fairly often, and some science fiction as well.

I read a bunch of genres - including some non-fiction genres like biographies, true crime, current events, and politics - but one of my favorites is contemporary fiction.

My favorite authors are John Irving (Geddy and Neil are also fans) and Anne Tyler.

No Crime choice? or does that come under mystery? I voted for mystery anyway...

"Crime" usually falls under "mystery" when it's fiction; when it's non-fiction, it's "true crime."

I'm a big fan of "true crime" myself, but this was a fictional poll.

Horror is still there, but I don't read it. When I worked in a public library, I felt that I had to read stuff from most genres to have any credibility at all when it came to reader advisory. But--I couldn't read horror. I can watch 3 minutes of a Stephen King made-for-TV-movie and be completely done in. My favorite is historical fiction, but also the multi-generational stuff that includes a contemporary setting (i.e., how the past affects the characters in the present). Hmm...that's about as clear as mud, but it's been a long day. Favorite authors are Louise Erdrich and Sherman Alexie.

Magic realism/Latin American (my favorite genre - Garcia Marquez, Allende, Borges, Bombal)

Sci-fi wins the battle, with mystery a close second and fantasy tagging along for the ride at third.

Philip K. Dick is my favorite sci-fi author. His work always grabs my brain and gives it a good throttle. And it flows well, it's endlessly interesting and entertaining, and it's totally bizarre, which is awesome. Supposedly he was schizophrenic and stuggled with drug addiction...this always adds some spice. One of my favorite tricks of his is in Martian Time-Slip, in which he repeats a chapter, but in the mind of a schizophrenic person who is re-experiencing a part of their life. Freaky and awe-inspiring.

That's too obscure of a genre to be included in the poll. I was thinking of broader subjects, not niche ones.
