Came up in JohnRoger's Geddy's Playlist thread, thought I would put it up to discussion!

So far we have two contenders: Yes' Fragile and Muse's Absolution

For Yes' Fragile there's three really big ones: Roundabout, Long Distance Runaround, and Heart Of The Sunrise

For Muse's Absolution there are two absolute titans: Time Is Running Out and Hysteria

BSSM by RHCP

The Righteous And The Wicked

Naked In The Rain

Suck My Kiss

I Could Have Lied

Just not even gonna mention Give It Away are you? lol

EDIT: This is actually a great great choice. The bass drives most of the songs and nearly every line is top tier.

Thought I'd give some album cuts some love especially Righteous for that intro leading to that eruption by Frusciante.

Fascination Street is my favorite bass riff of all time so I'm adding Disintegration for that alone. Simon is back in The Cure after briefly leaving a few months ago as well.

I very much want to say that the first 3 Metallica albums fit in. Cliff had his moments, and a few great bass songs. But most of his playing, in reality was above average solid. Not iconic. IMO. But he did raise the bar for what could be done in Metal.

Back in the day, his playing was a big deal. This isn't post-death hype.

Any of the early Bela fleck and the flecktones records. Victor is a beast.

My fave bass record is hemispheres.

Love me some Rick James too

Bootsy Collins' stuff would be considered iconic funk, for sure.

I`m such a guitar-lover that my attitude is "keep out if it, four strings". Except for Geddy, Sheehan and Hamm. I`m just not musically sophisticated enough to appreciate the bottom end in the usual mix of instruments.

Although a song that is dominated by a bassline, like this, I adore -

Yeah. I guess a bass line that is sampled by other artists can be considered as proof its iconic?

Boots is the man!

Okay so far we have a few contenders:

Fragile

Absolution

Blood Sugar Sex Magic

Disintegration

Lateralus

Quadrophenia

Led Zeppelin II

Who's Next

Paranoid

Killers

Hemispheres

Aja

Too Fast For Love

Sailing The Seas Of Cheese

And a few other artists were mentioned but without specific albums. I'm (of course) thinking of doing some kind of a poll with these results, so if you'd like your favorite bassist in there, let's hear about a particular album or two!

"Iconic"? Zep II, Who's Next, Paranoid.

I was definitely thinking about Zep II. Mainly for Ramble On. I've heard many a later bassline steal from it. The definition of influential.

If we are going to focus on iconic songs , It's give it away.

I don't consider any of the others to be iconic.
