Downgrading To A Flip Phone

Way back when, I was the last person I knew to get a cell phone to begin with, not out of any particular reason other than I didn't think I needed one. For many years I drove, walked, rode my bike, and all the other things we do and didn't have a phone so why all of a sudden did I need one "for emergencies?" I eventually got a flip phone and then many years later got a non-flip phone and am currently using one that's more than two years old with no plans to get a newer one.

Steve Jobs was an asshole but he was a marketing genius and his methods infected many other companies and millions of people hungering for the next, greatest thing, and that's kind of sad, imo.

I just bought a flip phone for my mom and we both really like it! The main challenge was finding one that runs on the 4G system (and will keep running on 5G) because so many I looked at were made to run only on 3G. Apparently major network carriers are planning (allegedly) to shut down their 3G networks sometime next year?? If she found one she liked I wanted her to be able to keep on using it.

She really likes it and it came in handy when she had a power outage this past weekend for over 24 hours.

I do have a smart phone, but much like FG above, mine is a 3 year old Samsung that cost $85.00 new. I'm hoping to keep it for awhile longer.

I've never owned a smartphone.

I purchased a new flip phone in Dec 2019 after replacing my other one that I had for seven years.

To me smartphones are a distraction in a world of information overload.

When push comes to shove where flip phones no longer exist, I'll acquire a smart phone.

A smartphone makes me feel dumb and a dumb phone makes me feel smart.

What model did she get?

We got a Doro 7050 , refurbished, from a store on ebay. A friend had one so that was what she wanted but Im not sure if they are sold new anymore. I just had to get a sim card from Consumer Cellular to put in it. Consumer Cellular also sells a flip phone called the Link II which is almost the same thing but mom was convinced she wanted the Doro. It's pretty nice.

I've owned a smartphone for about 5 years now. I held on to my flip phone as long as I could. I had that one for almost 10 years. The only reason I ended up getting a smartphone is because my phone provider was upgrading all services to 4 and 5G and my old flip phone wasn't capable of doing that. Smartphones are cool though. I get why they became so popular. We can pretty much do everything on them. All my posting here has been done on my smartphone for a few years now.

I didn't get a smartphone until my school required me to have one for my year studying in Rome. Even then I got an used one for free off of my best friend rather than buy one. I already had an iPad, iPod, and MacBook Air. Not like I wasn't already connected all the time anyway, so I didn't really get the point of having an iPhone to top it all off. Honestly, I would like to go back to having a flip phone. This smart phone is dumb and has never been more than a phone when I'm off of wifi anyway. Plus I upgraded from a classic to an iPod touch when my old iPod died last year, so I've already got a great portable camera. This thread's got me thinking... maybe I will just downgrade soon. My phone's barely more than an alarm to me right now, and I have other alarms I could use.

I changed to a smart phone for the same reason, the Razr wouldn't work with 4G but I've kept it to use as an alarm...Had it 11 years. :laughing guy: I agree that smart phones are a big time waster, I went from ribbing my husband for all the silly stuff he does on his to becoming just as addicted to mine. I would like to switch back to a flip phone, would be much easier to carry.

I am looking forward to the day when I retire and can get rid of my smartphone and most of the computers in my house.

I've been retired 3 years and I use my phone more than ever. I do my posting here with my computer, get tired of staring at the tiny screen. ;)

I`m in a very remote place and practically retired but decent internet is essential for streaming and buying stuff, and therefore I fall at the first hurdle of vanishing without a trace. Oh yeah, and my wife needs the internet for work, I forgot about her

If she reads that and you disappear, we'll know why.

The unspoken threat of my beloved chopping me up and leaving me in one of the many local woods or rivers is quite a motivator for being a better husband  Edited by IbanezJem

If I wasn't married I would already be gone. When I say off the grid I mean gone off the grid. No one would ever hear from me again and I don't need the internet for anything.
