I have just recently discovered this bands music and its f***ing amazing!

I downloaded "The Mountain" It blew me away.

I just purchased "Affinity" I'm equally impressed.

If you don't know this band, you should!

Trust Tick. :atickhum:

Coincidentally, at the merch stalls they sell "Haken Lube".

Love Haken, the Restoration EP is worth checking out.

I may have dreamed the Haken Lube thing....

Haken played with Mike Portnoy and Daniel Gildenlow (from Pain of Salvation) yesterday. The setlist was Dream Theater's 12 Step Suíte:

The Glass Priston

This Dying Soul

The Root of All Evil

Repentance

The Shattered Fortress

Affinity got my attention. I'm not fully warmed up to their prior material, but it's all very good nonetheless. Affinity is outstanding though.

I am currently obsessed with Haken. I would dearly love to go to Prog Power in Atlanta in Sept and see not only Haken but Mike Portnoy's Shattered Fortress set. Alas I will be traveling to Wisconsin that weekend. Sigh.

Anyway all 5 of Haken's albums are unbelievable!

I've hear the whole Mountain album and it's great. They're like a Jon Anderson-fronted DT or something.

I haven't been able to get into almost anything else they've done though, it's very strange.

There's much less of the Jon Anderson similarity on Affinity, but definitely hear it on their prior works. He tends to sign in a higher register (also like James LaBrie), but doesn't have to.

The singer is the clear weak link of the band, but they have some really good tunes.

He's pretty damn good in my book. What's weak about him?

I was wondering the same thing.

His vocal strength isn't too great but it works fine for the band.

It strikes me as being similar to those who say Geddy's vocals are weak, or Jon Anderson's etc etc. Ross brings something a little different to the band than your usual type of singer would, IMO, and is one of the defining parts of their sound. They wouldn't be the same without him, and that would be a bad thing.

Me too - he's got a great and very expressive voice.

Oh I don't know if anybody's ever said that Geddy had weak vocals while in his prime.

High-pitched vocals, sure, but loaded with tons of BALLS.

Nobody can touch Geddy's vocals in his prime IMO. And aside from that Lotus Land singer, nobody sounds like him either.
