I have a short bit (maybe 15-20 minutes, total) of studio rehearsals and outtakes from Aja, including a very different arrangement if I Got the News, compared to what went on the finished album. I like it a lot.

Here's "Stand by the Seawall". Gadd is so smooth...

OMG!!! HEAVEN!

I want to hear it all!

So cool! That sounds really nice...

I'm pretty sure that is actually NOT on the disc that I have...what I have is definitely rougher/outtake quality.

Sophisticated, polished and their best selling album.

Not my favourite album by The Dan though. That would be the funky The Royal Scam.

Yeah mine are Scam and Ecstasy. Have a special soft spot for Gaucho.

Aye. It has been a while, I listened to Gaucho again this morning.

A great album overshadowed by it's more illustrious predecessor.

Babylon Sisters, Glamour Profession and Third World Man are all fine tracks.

Gaucho is awesome.

i love the title track and Third World Man in particular

Any of fagen's solo records are great. Especially the nightfly and actually his most recent Sunken Condos. both could have been Dan albums.

The full Gaucho and Royal Scam alternate & out takes.

I had never heard the royal scam material but have the gaucho outakes and mine has three more songs.

The katy lied outakes i have contains the aja material and most songs have 2 or 3 takes.

Lots of other stuff out there like.

The early years. Also released under other names.

You got walk it like you talk it. An early soundtrack for film.

Unreleased singles like my all too mobile home and wetside story (?)

Royal scam and katy lied are my faves.

I saw Steely Dan last this year in Vegas. First time. I thought they sucked. Perhaps they needed Steve Gadd on the drums.

Anyway, I put on "AJA" tonight.

An epic masterpiece album.

Every Rush Fan on the planet should own this record.

The title track will always be my favorite.

It's all about Gadd's triplets...................

Is this OLD MAN's thread for 2017?? Let the pensioners sign up for this! Give them a place to post!

No doudt. The best of the best competing for solos.

Thanks goose for the link. I need to compare but these gaucho tunes seem to be of a much more refined nature than the one i have?

In regards to my post about the early years i think its called becker and fagen the early years. I have a dan release called you go where i go which if i recall correctly has some but not all of the early years? It has early versions of brooklyn and any world that I'm welcome.

Finally the bonus track on gold is another fave.

Here at the western world!

More like the well placed whistle!

Keith carlock does just fine but the first time i saw the dan the drummer was dennis chambers iirc.

Is aja still the high water mark for recording perfection? I have always heard that folks play aja when test driving high end components.

Yes, it is! As far as that is concerned there is nothing better, in my opinion.

Thanks again for posting this. The gaucho outakes here much better than mine. Songs i had never heard before.

The royal scam outakes are cool with green earrings being the best imo.

Not all thay impressed by behind the seawall. The gadd outake.

Its kinda curious how tunes from aja were made during katy lied. Then lay dormant during the royal scam and teemerge for aja? Thanks again.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Steve Gadd did the AJA track with the band first time and at the end realised that was it, first time played, recorded, one take done... if that is true then... wow, talk about going with the feel of the music and what a natural talent.... 40 years on I'd still be going... um, well, almost there.... Wish I could find that article, was decades ago if I have got it right.

I am so sad! I had to pull this thread up! WOW! I mentioned seeing the Dan in Vegas.

Forgot about that.

Intellectual band. An audiophile's band. One of the greatest bands in the land. A musician's band.

Thank God I met Steve Gadd in my life and called him Mr. Triplet to his face. He laughed. So cool man.

"AJA" is a perfect album. A masterpiece. Gadd just rips it on the title track. OMG! It's playing right now! The end of "AJA" OH MY GADD!!!!!

RIP WALTER BECKER!
