x1yyz
There is a definite science to putting together the track listing on an album. You want the album to start off strong, and the second track needs to be at least as strong as the first to keep listeners interested. But often by the time you reach the end of the album they've run out of good material and things just peter out, which is why I really appreciate it when an album ends with an amazing song. This is most important for subsequent listens; it's what makes you finish re-listening to the entire album instead of stopping prematurely. Here are some amazing closers from our favourite band: A Farewell to Kings - Cygnus X-1 -- Such an epic song! Hemispheres - La Villa Strangiato -- Arguably one of the best instrumentals ever. Permanent Waves - Natural Science -- Didn't this win best song from a recent PeW poll? Clockwork Angels - The Garden -- A very different feel from the rest of the album, but very possibly the last Rush song ever, and most likely autobiographical as well. What else do you like?
x1yyz
And because I listened to this about six or eight times yesterday, Nevermore's "This Godless Endeavor":
Lucas
The first that came to mind was Cygnus X1 - Heart Of The Sunrise closes Fragile in amazing fashion - UFO's Profession Of Violence is an amazing song, made more so in that the guitar that closes the song also closes the entire album ( Wild, Willing and The Innocent )
Lucas
You See Me Crying as the final song on Toys In The Attic has always struck me as perfect .. An incredibly underrated song on one of the best albums of all time
x1yyz
Symphony X has "Legend", which lets the Underworld album on an uplifting note. http://youtu.be/B1GqDjmztug I've heard several albums that are intense/sad/disturbing, but then they have a closing song that makes you feel okay. The only album like this that I can think of at the moment is Nevermore's Dreaming Neon Black with the closer "Forever":

Chronos
The first album that came to mind was Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte, with its lofty closer "Shadow of the Heirophant." What a climax this song offers in its 5-minute outro.

Verena
* Rush: Countdown (Signals), Between The Wheels (Grace Under Pressure), We Hold On (Snakes and Arrows) * Lacuna Coil: Wave of Anguish (Unleashed Memories), Comalies (Comalies), My Spirit (Dark Adrenaline) * In Extremo (German rock band which is my second after Rush): Erdbeermund (Kein Blick Zurück), Ich Vermiss Dich (Sterneneisen), Die Beute (Kunstraub) * Nightwish: - Walking In The Air (Oceanborn): the song is a cover from "The Snowman" theme, but it's a *great* album closer. - Fantasmic (Wishmaster): It's an amazing old epic song.- Beauty of The Beast (Century Child): Another incredible epic album closer! - Meadows of Heaven (Dak Passion Play): it's among the good songs sang by Anette Olzon. It does fit her voice and it closes the album with a 'enlightened' environment.- Imaginaerum: of course, the album title and the beauty of the band. ... just to start. Great thread!

Day of Light
I'm not the first person to come up with this idea, but the first song that sprung to mind when I saw the thread title was Isis's Garden of Light on their album In The Absence of Truth. It transitions so smoothly, and it's a great song, mainly because of the last 4 minutes of instrumentation. Riverside's Found was a great, soft closer to the magical Love, Fear and the Time Machine. Garbage had two good closers on their first and second albums: Milk and You Look So Fine. Relatively slower, comparatively romantic and dark songs, and they were both hits for good reason. They're lovely. Edited October 5, 2016 by Day of Light
