Did Neil mean things like this...

This snakesking thong will make every woman's wardrobe complete. If your man is a Rush fan, this thong will make his wildest fantasies come true.

Well actually, that part is up to you, but at least you will look the part. All sales final for this item.

Sure, there is something to be said for musical integrity, but in the end it is a business. If you can be a crappy musician and make tons of money off of it, then why not? I'd rather do that then do the job I am doing now. America wouldn't be "The Land of opportunity" if everyone stayed true to their values.

"Glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity.."

The one thing that you don't see is Rush junk all over K-mart and Wal-Mart and Target. etc.... I've never purchased anything more than maybe a Rush notepad anywhere other than a music store in the 35+ years I've been a fan.

But Kiss stuff? You see it all over the place! Hell in the early 80's I worked for cruddy little East Coast store similar (and much smaller) than the three stores I mentioned above, and WE sold Kiss crap! (and not only in the music section!) We sold Kiss T-shirts in the kids and men's dept's...we sold Kiss dolls and other stuff in the toy dept.

I don't remember anything Rush except for maybe the odd poster and album in the music department! So don't give me that "Ru$h" BS! Rush sells their own stuff, I'd be willing to bet their licensing is 1/16th of Kiss'! (if that!)

One can see why RUSH would like to or NEED to push their merchandise to make profits. They probable not in the top15 grossing tours in 2015.....

A band like One Direction leads the way....I have no idea who that is...they must be country.

This thread reminds me of the portion in the Bob Dylan song, "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)...

"Disillusioned words like bullets bark

As human gods aim for their mark

Make everything from toy guns that spark

To flesh-colored Christs that glow in the dark

It’s easy to see without looking too far

That not much is really sacred"

how long ago did that quote from Neil happen...recently?

Even if you asked him today, I bet he'd give a very similar answer. He's just never seemed able to lighten up and see the fun side of rock and roll. So somebody had KISS Army tattoos. Why not just acknowledge that they must be devoted fans, respect that and/or laugh it off rather than forming a critical judgment about them?

Is that Rush's choice, or K-mart, Wal-Mart and Target's choice?

I can't really comment on Neil's values and all that, but I will say that I don't really enjoy KISS's music that much, and so I don't own any of their stuff. I do enjoy Rush, and have bought a fair number of shirts, posters, books, pins, calendars, and stuff like that. I'm glad they sell it, and I gladly purchase it. I don't have enough disposable income to buy some of the more expensive stuff, but I don't begrudge the folks that do, as long as it makes them happy in some way.

I don't pretend to understand how merchandising works, how much the band is involved and all that. Does Peart get a choice to say, well, no I don't think a Rush bar stool is a good idea? Or do they sell the rights to the brand to some third party? I remember the thread about Hugh Syme's album cover book, and the choice to release some crazily expensive $500 limited edition or whatever it was. My question was, isn't this Syme (rightfully?) profiting from his work? It's not always about the boys in the band, is it?

With that, I'll stop. I will cheerfully admit to being naive about how this stuff works. . .

Someone on here said (I think it was shortly after R40 tickets or when the R40 package went on sale), that each Rush member is in charge of one aspect of management (don't know the correct term I should use). I think Neil is the one who gives his yea or nay to marketing products.

You can't really compare other bands to Kiss when it comes to merchandise. Regardless of whether you find any value in Kiss musically, what they created with the individual makeup characters was pure genius in terms of marketing potential. And I don't think they even realized it at the time of creation, it only occurred to them later on what all they could do with it. Wouldn't most people in their position go at least part way down that path? OK, maybe condoms, toilet paper and caskets are a bit much. ;) Even if Rush were inclined to sell dolls or lunch boxes, they could never come close to selling as many as Kiss. And that's a compliment to both bands - KISS on being able to push fantasy and Rush on being respected musicians in reality.

The Rush tour is over. It was only 35 dates, correct? It was very successful. Rush is not going to tour playing stadiums and selling out multiple nights in arenas. It a numbers game, anyway. Rush played 35 dates to their devoted fans. It was very successful.

That wasn't my point. The point I was making is that as of August 2015, Rush is #14 on a list of the 15 most successful tours.

We will see if they stay at #14 when the year is over and the bands currently touring have finished up.

There's nothing wrong with selling a few items to the fans if there's a demand but Gene and Paul seem to view their band a nothing more than a business
