condemned2bfree
Whats your favourite political band and/or fav political song? Although not strictly a political band, New model army venture frequently into the political arena. One of many great songs by them, is this song,'spirit of the falklands'.So much more than a political band though, for me, N.M.A are as essential, as music gets. The natives are restless tonight, sirCooped up on estates with no hope in sightThey need some kind of distractionWe can give them that'Cause they'd die if they only had something to die forThey'd kill if they only had something to kill forThey'd cheer if they only had something to cheer forWe can give them thatSo it's off to war we go (I never believed it)Bring out all the flags (I never believed it)Fight the good fightIt's working like a dream, sirHalf the nation are hooked on the baitWaiting for the next victorious instalmentWe can give them that'Cause it's no surprise that young men are heroesIt's no surprise that young men are strongIt's no surprise that young men are foolishWe've known that all alongExciting pictures on News at Ten (I never believed it)Read all the crap on all the front pages (I never believed it)Fight the good fightChorus: Dead men in the South AtlanticIt's meant to warm our heartsThey think that they died for you and meOh God, what a farce, what a farce And now it's the repeatsPlugging the Falklands and the Falklands' spiritShow the pictures again and againTill the next war comes around'Cause we'll die if we only have something to die forWe'll kill if we only have something to kill forWe'll cheer if we only have something to cheer forThat is worthy of the nameOh yes the next war (I never believed it)See the propaganda in TV fiction (I never believed it)Enemies with horns and tails Chorus: There are dead men in the South AtlanticIt's meant to warm our heartsThey think that they died for you and meOh God, what a farce, what a farceThere's crippled men back home in EnglandDoesn't it warm your heartsThey think they fought for peace and freedomPoor boys, what a farce, what a farce SongwritersHEATON, ROBERT CHARLES / SULLIVAN, JUSTIN EDWARD Edited June 3, 2016 by condemned2bfree

goose
One of my favorite bands, period. So many political tracks to choose from, but this really hits me: Conquistador of Mexico, the Zulu and the NavahoThe Belgians in the Congo, short memory Plantation in Virginia, the Raj in British IndiaThe deadline in South Africa, short memory The story of El Salvador, the silence of HiroshimaDestruction of Cambodia, short memory Short memory, must have a short memory The sight of hotels by the Nile, the designated Hilton styleWith running water specially bought short memory A smallish man Afghanistan, a watch dog in a nervous landThey're only there to lend a hand short memory Wake up in sweat at dead of nightAnd in the tents new rifles hey short memory If you read the history books you'll seeThe same things happen again and againRepeat repeat short memory they've all got itWhen are we going to play it again... goose
Cold Chisel is another Aussie band that I adore (to steal from Segue). They have a number of tracks told from the perspective of the Vietnam Vet, and this is one of my fav's. From Wiki... "When the War is Over has become one of Cold Chisel's most popular songs and the one that has been covered by more artists than any other. At least five other versions of the song have been recorded, one of which attained #1 on the Australian music chart."Ain't nobody gonna steal this heart awayAin't nobody gonna steal this heart awayWhen the war is overGot to get awayPack my bag to no placeIn no time no dayYou and I we used each other's shoulderStill so young but somehow so much olderHow can I go home and not getBlown awayYou and I had our sights setOn somethingHope this doesn't mean our days are numberedI got plans for more than a wanted manAll around this chaos and madnessCan't help feeling nothing more than sadnessOnly choice to face it the best I canWhen the war is overGot to start againTry to hold a trace of what it wasBack thenYou and I we sent each other storiesJust a page I'm lost in all its gloryHow can I go home and not get blown awayAin't nobody gonna steal this heart away

Blue J
Bob Marley- Redemption Song That is absolutely one of my all time favs. Simple and straightforward, and not angry (though there is certainly a place for anger in politically-themed/protest music)...Marley's songbook is loaded with greats. But Redemption Song is at the top of the heap, in my opinion.

Cant think of another artist with such skill in combining these approaches.

Rage Against The Machine is nothing but political and they rocked harder than any of those pusillanimous "bands". Perhaps, but the political thrill I get from U2's War is easily the first good memory that comes to mind when I think of political music I have liked, and I can subjectively choose to give that gut reaction precedence over harder rocking politics from arguably more politically serious bands like ratm if I so please.
