Your favourite political band and song

Recommended Posts

Whats your favourite political band and/or fav political song? Although not strictly a political band, New model army venture frequently into the political arena.

One of many great songs by them, is this song,'spirit of the falklands'.So much more than a political band though, for me, N.M.A are as essential, as music gets.

The natives are restless tonight, sir

Cooped up on estates with no hope in sight

They need some kind of distraction

We can give them that

'Cause they'd die if they only had something to die for

They'd kill if they only had something to kill for

They'd cheer if they only had something to cheer for

We can give them that

So it's off to war we go (I never believed it)

Bring out all the flags (I never believed it)

Fight the good fight

It's working like a dream, sir

Half the nation are hooked on the bait

Waiting for the next victorious instalment

We can give them that

'Cause it's no surprise that young men are heroes

It's no surprise that young men are strong

It's no surprise that young men are foolish

We've known that all along

Exciting pictures on News at Ten (I never believed it)

Read all the crap on all the front pages (I never believed it)

Fight the good fight

Chorus:

Dead men in the South Atlantic

It's meant to warm our hearts

They think that they died for you and me

Oh God, what a farce, what a farce

And now it's the repeats

Plugging the Falklands and the Falklands' spirit

Show the pictures again and again

Till the next war comes around

'Cause we'll die if we only have something to die for

We'll kill if we only have something to kill for

We'll cheer if we only have something to cheer for

That is worthy of the name

Oh yes the next war (I never believed it)

See the propaganda in TV fiction (I never believed it)

Enemies with horns and tails

Chorus:

There are dead men in the South Atlantic

It's meant to warm our hearts

They think that they died for you and me

Oh God, what a farce, what a farce

There's crippled men back home in England

Doesn't it warm your hearts

They think they fought for peace and freedom

Poor boys, what a farce, what a farce

One of my favorite bands, period. So many political tracks to choose from, but this really hits me:

Conquistador of Mexico, the Zulu and the Navaho

The Belgians in the Congo, short memory

Plantation in Virginia, the Raj in British India

The deadline in South Africa, short memory

The story of El Salvador, the silence of Hiroshima

Destruction of Cambodia, short memory

Short memory, must have a short memory

The sight of hotels by the Nile, the designated Hilton style

With running water specially bought short memory

A smallish man Afghanistan, a watch dog in a nervous land

They're only there to lend a hand short memory

Wake up in sweat at dead of night

And in the tents new rifles hey short memory

If you read the history books you'll see

The same things happen again and again

Repeat repeat short memory they've all got it

When are we going to play it again...

Cold Chisel is another Aussie band that I adore (to steal from Segue). They have a number of tracks told from the perspective of the Vietnam Vet, and this is one of my fav's. From Wiki... "When the War is Over has become one of Cold Chisel's most popular songs and the one that has been covered by more artists than any other. At least five other versions of the song have been recorded, one of which attained #1 on the Australian music chart."

Ain't nobody gonna steal this heart away

Ain't nobody gonna steal this heart away

When the war is over

Got to get away

Pack my bag to no place

In no time no day

You and I we used each other's shoulder

Still so young but somehow so much older

How can I go home and not get

Blown away

You and I had our sights set

On something

Hope this doesn't mean our days are numbered

I got plans for more than a wanted man

All around this chaos and madness

Can't help feeling nothing more than sadness

Only choice to face it the best I can

When the war is over

Got to start again

Try to hold a trace of what it was

Back then

You and I we sent each other stories

Just a page I'm lost in all its glory

How can I go home and not get blown away

Ain't nobody gonna steal this heart away

Still hopeful, nice.

Everybody knows, not the original.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kxHY7xVTNhU

Lyrics:

everybody knows that the dice are loaded

everybody rolls with their fingers crossed

everybody knows that the war is over

everybody knows that the good guys lost

everybody knows the fight was fixed

the poor stay poor and the rich get rich

that's how it goes

everybody knows

'cause everybody knows that the boat is leaking

everybody knows that the captain lied

everybody's got this broken feeling

like their daddy or their dog just died

everybody's talking to their pockets

everybody wants a box of chocolates

and a long stem rose

everybody knows

'cause everybody knows, everybody knows

that's how it goes

everybody knows

everybody knows, everybody knows

that's how it goes

everybody knows

everybody knows it's now or never

everybody knows that it's me or you

everybody knows that you live forever

when you've done a line or two

everybody knows the deal is rotten

old black joe's still pickin' cotton

for your ribbons and your bows

everybody knows

'cause everybody knows that you're in trouble

everybody knows what you've been trhough

from the bleeding cross of calgary

to the beach in malibu

everybody knows you're coming apart

take one last look at the sacred heart

before it blows

everybody knows

'cause everybody knows, everybody knows

that's how it goes

everybody knows

'cause everybody knows, everybody knows

that's how it goes

yeah everybody knows

everybody knows, everybody knows

that's how it goes

everybody knows

Bob Marley- Redemption Song

That is absolutely one of my all time favs.

Simple and straightforward, and not angry (though there is certainly a place for anger in politically-themed/protest music)...Marley's songbook is loaded with greats. But Redemption Song is at the top of the heap, in my opinion.

Yep this song says such a lot, like you say not angry with it too, probably the best way to take on the things he sang about, really. Cant think of another artist with such skill in combining these approaches.

Are you f***ing kidding me right now?

Rage Against The Machine is nothing but political and they rocked harder than any of those pusillanimous "bands".

Perhaps, but the political thrill I get from U2's War is easily the first good memory that comes to mind when I think of political music I have liked, and I can subjectively choose to give that gut reaction precedence over harder rocking politics from arguably more politically serious bands like ratm if I so please.

Of course you can and it's okay to be wrong. :16ton:
