Ancient Ways
Okay I don't know if I can name a "best" artist but here's just me rapid-firing a bunch of names off the top of my head. We can't talk about good new artists without mentioning Ghost. Not everybody likes them (and I understand most of the criticism) but they are certainly promising. Blind Guardian are peaking currently. Their last 4 albums have been better than anything else in their catalog in my opinion. Dragonforce. Yeah yeah samey power metal--but they're a 21st century band, and they are very competent. Foster The People. Torches was an excellent debut. Arctic Monkeys. They somehow avoid mention despite being pure rock, with liveliness and attitude. Again, not everybody likes them, but they deserve a mention. Simple Plan same deal. Death Cab For Cutie. Formed in 1997, are still making good music. Why is indie rock not "real" rock to some people? Three Days Grace also a band formed in 1997 but equally as important. TDG influenced more bands in their heyday (arguably 2005-2010) than a lot of classic rock bands. They released an album in 2015. Muse. Overrated, but who cares. They're good. Arcade Fire. Butterfly Explosion. Severely underrated shoegaze. Formed in 2005. Karnivool. Excellent metal.A lot I agree with here. Foster the people, death cab, three days, muse especially. I'm surprised we haven't heard more from foster the people. The main songwriter and vocalist has been writing commercial jingles so he knows how to write a melody and a hook. Death cab is always great. I don't own any three days grace but I am constantly hearing songs I like on radio and looking up who it is and I'm surprised how often it's another three days grace song I like. Muse. What can I say? They are fantastic. Love the intensity and their vRied lyrical subjects.
Segue Myles
I own the debut Three Days Grace album. It is ok, but my best friend loves them a lot more than me. Muse can really hook me, but I must confess that I am rarely into singers with a falsetto range. Regardless of opinion, I think both are terrific songwriters! I admired Muse for the ballsy move they made with The 2nd Law. I think it's one of the best albums of the millennium.
Rick N. Backer
Up to but not including Icky Thump, The White Stripes, and Wolfmother are my favorite millenial bands. Another great newer band is The Parlor Mob. I'm inclined to add Audioslave, although Chris Cornell and the Rage Against the Machine boys became famous pre-2000. Icky Thump, yes! Love that track. Wolfmother too! :haz: New album is best since their debut. Victorious is great.

Segue Myles
Baroness are phenomenal. Unfortunate name now, but Isis are amazing. Ignore the name (I know currently it's not easy), and try Oceanic or Panopticon. Anathema, Paradise Lost and Katatonia have released perhaps the greatest works of their career this century.

Fall Out Boy remain firmly the new waversion of "emo". Sadly they were one of the main bands that changed the sound of the genre and truly lost the appeal for many. Still annoys me what emo supposedly turned into. It bares no resemblence to the gorgeous works of Christie Front Drive, Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate or even early Weezer. But I like Fall Out Boy. But like My Chemical Romance, they became an emo stereotype despite having only the slightest resemblence to the bands first associated with the tag. However, I have grown to like Fall Out Boy more over time. Great pop songcraft!

Segue Myles
The Mars Volta!!!! OOH!! Not a fan but I remember how much the critics fawned over them! I am more partial to At The Drive-In or Sparta... Ya know, the marginally less innovitive stuff haha
Lucas
I think I posted this one in the "Is Rock Dead" thread, but it is a fantastic new album "New" prog is the most difficult music for me to get into and appreciate - so much of it is so mechanical and glossy .. But Anekdoten is excellent
Citizen of the World
Karnivool - Sound Awake (2009)http://www.progarchives.com/progressive_rock_discography_covers/5448/cover_271715842010.jpg Rather Tool-inspired to my ears, but a little more musical. Great tenor-voiced vocalist. http://youtu.be/Cjvtx3HMUksGreat album, great band

I think my chem is also solid as well as simple plan. Welcome to the black parade might be the best song of the 00s. It's in the running.

My Chemical Romance never bettered the genre classic Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. Adore that album, as for what came after, they definitely outgrew their influences (but the media would not drop the "emo" tag and it came to severely misrepresent the genre). I still find the way emo went downill heartbreaking...but that's all in the past now. I still have my favourite albums, I won't weep!

Blue J
Someone mentioned a lack of great indie rock being mentioned...and so I present: Robert Pollard- his main band, Guided By Voices (24 albums, with another one coming out in about three weeks), plus his solo albums (26 and counting), and ALL of his various side projects: Boston Spaceships, Circus Devils, Teenage Guitar, Lifeguards, Lexo and the Leapers, Ricked Wicky...those are all him. He is the most prolific songwriter I can think of in the past 25 years. Up until about 1998, there was only Guided By Voices. His solo albums and all of the side projects are pretty much strictly from 2000 onward. 2011 was his busiest year for new music that I can recall- he recorded and released no fewer than seven albums of new material in those twelve months. No duplicated songs, no live recordings of old stuff- all new. But even now, I'd say it's unusual that a year goes by when he doesn't release at least four new albums. The GBV album that is being released on April 22nd will be his second release of 2016. Great, crunchy, British Invasion meets mid '90s abrasive indie sounds.

The Cat 3
The first band that came to mind is The Gaslight Anthem. I bought "The '59 Sound" on a whim just by the cover and title without ever hearing them or of them. Little did I know that I was about to find out that rock and roll, in fact, is not dead. Their music is everything that is good about good old fashioned rock and roll.

Lucas
As long as Mike Ness is alive, rock will also 2004's Don't Take Me For Granted from the fantastic album "Love, Sex, And Rock n Roll" Edited March 30, 2016 by Lucas
Segue Myles
It's a shame this thread is filling up with old sounds. There are plenty of current bands making great music with modern styles. Where is Union and PolariseMe when I need them...
ReRushed
Sigur Rós is probably my favorite band post-2000. Although their best album was released in 1999. I love Deerhunter. A great alternative/indie/post-punk band. Halcyon Digest is wonderful and might be my favorite album post-2000. The Dear Hunter released The Color Spectrum, a nine EP concept series that is incredibly consistent and diverse.
pip65
Riverside, Haken and Gazpacho are among my favourites. Most or all of their output has been since 2000.
