185. Fragile - Yes (New World Man)

One of the first albums I bought by them in the eighties after getting into them. A classic album that doesnt' need much of an introduction to music fans. "Roundabout" and "heart of the sunrise" are among YES's best and most well known but the whole thing sounds great and is a very enjoyable musical experience.

 

Not only can Fragile be considered the best Yes album, and the best prog album, it is arguably the best album ever - period

I don't feel well today so I'm tempted to be jaded and just say all the good people were still alive on this one. It's true though- you get the guitars of both Duane Allman and Dickey Betts and Berry Oakley's awesome bass playing. Duane does slide guitar on Statesboro Blues and there are double guitars jamming on Whipping Post with Gregg's organ work stepping in. If you see the older Gregg Allman now and don't get the excitement, you will after you listen to this.

Every single time I listen to this record, I discover something new. Devin layered so many tiny details and effects into this album. And it has some kickass metal songs that flow right into each other. Definitely one of the very best progressive release in the new millennium.

Wire's third album, and last before a long hiatus, capping the classic art punk trio beginning with Pink Flag and Chairs Missing, A darker more somber take on the Wire sound. If you like Joy Division/early New Order, and the more menacing side of Magazine, Gang of Four, Buzzcocks, PIL, etc etc, then this is an album for you. For me, the artistic peak of post-punk before it continued on its way to morphing into '80s alternative power pop a la the Pixies.

197. Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness- The Smashing Pumpkins

 

How many well known double rock albums can you think of? Most of them are from the seventies right? The Smashing Pumpkins changed that with this release. However, they kept the bombast that made much of those seventies concept albums so much fun. There are so many different things going on with this album. There's metal, grunge, alternative, soft/mellow stuff and even a bit of prog. There's even a mellotron on here. Great stuff and a classic 90's alternative rock album.
