So I'm not really a metal head at all, though I have nothing against metal and generally enjoy it when I hear it. I've just jumped into this album a bunch of people mentioned called Terminal Redux by a band named Vektor based solely off of the album art. That's not super important, but it got me thinking about metal. I'm now rather curious about metal, but I'm not sure exactly how to phrase my curiosity in a question. Hmm...okay, for those of you here that may have some idea about my somewhat eclectic music tastes, what do you think might be a metal band or album I could really get into and want to play again? Or if you know nothing about my tastes, then what might be a metal album that's very easy to get into and to want to play over and over again?

Sorry if this seems self-centered, but I'm basically just asking for recs to satisfy my curiousity and maybe get me listening to more metal, idk. :)

Ty, will listen to once this Vektor album finishes. I do like this actually, despite the constant screaming he maintains some intense musicality in his pitches and rhythms, and doesn't go overboard or get too monotonous. My only real qualm is the kind of contained production.

I'm gonna go old school and recommend Paranoid by Black Sabbath and Sad Wings Of Destiny by Judas Priest.

If you're gonna try and get into metal, you may as well hear it from the two most influential bands the genre has. The two bands that pioneered the genre. Sabbath created the heavy sound, Priest created the metal sound.

I've heard Paranoid and really loved it, but I'll be glad to revisi! :). Sad Wings I've not heard, but I have heard Screaming For Vengeance, a good album, hopefully Sad Wings is better. Ty! :)

If you've already heard Paranoid and want to try something else from Sabbath, then listen to Master Of Reality. It's the follow up to Paranoid and the riffs are better and heavier.

Screaming For Vengeance is a very good album but it was the commercial side of Priest. The albums DD mentioned are all better. Those four albums probably had more influence on the overall sound of metal than any other releases in the genre. That is not a slight on Sabbath's huge influence but most metal bands that came along in the 80s copied the Priest sound in some way.

Cool. So my list:

Essentials:

Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny

Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality

Additionals:

Judas Priest - Sun After Sin, Stained Class, Killing Machine

Black Sabbath - Paranoid (revisit)

Listened:

Solution .45 - For Aeons Past

I didn't mind the Solution .45 album, but it wasn't highly appealing and I didn't really mind when my iPad almost ran out of power and I didn't finish the last song. Couldn't really get into it.

I like Vektor, and if you like what they are doing, they were obviously influenced by Voivod ..

Great cover Astronomy Domine

So I know I posted about my curiousity regarding metal a while back, but I think now I'm starting to get it. Judas Priest Stained Class is excellent and I think I might soon be a Judas Priest fan. I've also been getting into Anthrax, Metallica, and Slayer somewhat, with pretty good results. I bought Anthrax Among The Living recently, and I really enjoy most of it, especially since most of the songs have a real melody. I also discovered I really enjoy Metallica ...And Justice For All. And I think at the very moment my first experience with Ride The Lightning is going very well as well, so count me in as a fan of old school Metallica. The Slayer stuff I've listened to (Reign In Blood, Seasons In The Abyss) I've enjoyed, but I haven't been thrilled with.

Anyway my real reason for posting (other than that update), is I was just browsing iTunes and they appear to currently have a whole bunch of classic metal albums at the low low price of 4.99 a pop (or 5.99 for a couple). I wouldn't ask here if I knew what to get (if I do decide to get something), but since one of my new favorite metal albums (Stained Class) is sadly not on the list of cheapies, I really don't know.

Here are some of the albums currently that low that interest me:

Metallica - ...And Justice For All, Ride The Lightning

Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss, South Of Heaven, Reign In Blood, Divine Intervention

Anthrax - State Of Euphoria, For All Kings, Spreading The Disease, Persistance Of Time, Attack Of The Killer B's

S.O.D. - Speak English Or Die

Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Master Of Reality, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, Heaven And Hell, Black Sabbath, 13

Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny

Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying, Countdown To Extinction, Dystopia, Youthanasia, So Far, So Good...So What?

That's not all of them, but many of the most famous ones I spotted. I own none of them. If you were in my position, what one album would you get?

Except for SOD which was just some side project from Scott Ian and Charlie Benante from Anthrax, you really can't go wrong with anything else. I'd say take advantage of the sale and get everything you can because who knows how long it will last.

OK, one album from each:

Ride The Lightning

Reign In Blood (if you like more melody then go with Seasons)

Spreading The Disease

Master Of Reality

Sad Wings (no album influenced the metal sound more)

Peace Sells (why isn't Rust In Peace part of the sale?)
