PolarizeMe
There was a good discussion about this incident on the "Mike vs. Mike" thread. It's hilariously embarrassing on Portnoy's part, I'm still laughing about it! :rfl: :rfl: Looks like I'll have to shelve some money just to buy a DT shirt that doesn't make any reference to the last two albums, because the only DT shirt I own has artwork from DT12 and the tour dates are from the Spring 2014 US Tour! :LOLsign:

treeduck
Portnoy needs to adopt more of Keith Moon attitude to life and drumming.

Loved the last two albums more than most latter-Portnoy era albums. He brought a suffocating presence to them even in the music, and I'm glad he's gone. All flash, little substance on the drums. PolarizeMe
I actually didn't become a DT fan until AFTER Porntoy left. I wouldn't have even listened to DT in the first place had it not been my curiosity of what the big deal was with him leaving and all.

I wouldn't have even listened to DT in the first place had it not been my curiosity of what the big deal was with him leaving and all. I was a metalhead in high school and knew a lot of musicians who bowed at the feet of Dream Theater. It was around 2007 when I bought Systematic Chaos and Images & Words. Talk about a world of a difference. I loved Images & Words for its prowess yet pop sensibility, and I thought Systematic Chaos lacked direction and was just an overbearing album. Felt the same about Black Clouds. Six Degrees is one of my all time favorite records, and I did love Train of Thought, but anything after ToT was overwhelming. Seemed like they were trying way too hard to produce prog rock masterpieces, and they fell short almost every time. That's just me. I like the new direction.

Mr. Not
Dream Theater... The thing about their discography is I can't say there was a certain era that was better than any other... This means that with the future at hand, they can either break this streak by finally releasing several great albums consecutively, or terrible ones. Each pairing through their timeline has a strong half, and a subpar to unlikable half. Red = Subpar or Unlikable Dream and Day UniteImages & Words AwakeFalling Into Infinity Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence Train of Thought Octavarium Systematic Chaos Black Clouds & Silver Linings A Dramatic Turn of Events Dream Theater

I've been searching for a word to describe the difference in drummers, and suffocating is very fitting of Portnoy. The band now seems more happy, more open in sound and more equal in terms of band members. Portnoy's personality was very overpowering I think.

Portnoy's personality was very overpowering I think. I've always had a feeling that John Myung (and to a lesser extent James Labrie) secretly hated Portnoy. Maybe it's just Myung's aloofness, but to me it seemed like "peasant and authoritarian figure" best described the Myung x Portnoy relationship in the band for the last half of Portnoy-era, and once he left, Myung passively celebrated.

Mick It was Portnoy's lameass attempt to try being Mikael Åkerfeldt because he was inspired by Opeth at the time. His death growls are so horrendous they desecrate all those who can actually master the death growl technique.

I couldn't agree more. I heard a lot more Myung on the self-titled album than I could remember on the others. I'll never forget when Portnoy left the band and he announced, officially, that the band would be taking a five year break for other projects, and a day later the band was like, "Hold on, that's not how we're gonna do this." :rfl:Seemed like sweet relief for everyone that Portnoy made that move. They seem like a much happier band and each musician can breathe a little more. Self-titled was a really fine record.
