A Flock Of Seagulls

Sooo...I avoided this band for years thinking they were like the worst band ever...just because I only ever heard people talk about the hair. "Hey, if all people can talk about is the weird hairdo the music must suck, right?"

Well, no, it doesn't. I just finished listening to their debut album and I find it to be an absolute gem! I have been listening non-stop to Power Windows and Hold Your Fire lately, and this band and album fit the sort of vibe I am after at the moment.

So guys, how were they received at large in the eighties, and what are your opinions?

I absolutely adore the debut album. It's a New Wave masterpiece. And I really enjoy the second album Listen.

I don't rely on A Flock of Seagulls to challenge my intellect. I rely on them to tap my foot. Good stuff. No guilt in the pleasure of listening to them.

And let's not forget:

I grew up in the New York City metropolitan area, and they were always being played on the FM stations in the early eighties. But not everyone liked them. In my circle of friends, I was the only one.

The only album of theirs that I had was the one that had "Wishing" on it. I forget if that was their debut album or not.

Loved their sound.

This was the epitome of what I hated when they were big. Then, a couple of years back, I heard I ran on the radio and was surprised at the amount and quality of guitar work on that song.

They were quite popular in the 80s, even if they also got joked about because of the guy's hair. There were three songs that got airplay (I Ran, Wishing, Telecommunication) and I think most people heard only those songs and weren't familiar with the rest of their stuff.

I saw them (and a lot of other bands) as fashion driven not music or artistically driven. I haven't heard enough to know if that opinion was correct but I'm still of the opinion that most of the bands of this ilk were more "style" than substance. One exception is Duran Duran from that era. A lot of disposable one hit wonder types. Of course, some bands were lumped in unfairly like talking heads or the police.

I had the haircut and I'm still pissed about it! I ran ... no pictures thankfully

:o

Say it isn't so T-man.

Well,

They were ok. Back in the bar hopping days you had to adapt to that style of music when dancing with the ladies if you wanted any chance of scoring. :P

Edited,

Now I want to listen to A-Ha "Take On Me".

I was married at the time and my ex was a hair stylist ... the cut looked good on me then, but was too much like work to keep it stylin, I much prefer my Ted Nugent 70s look, so now, I let my freak flag fly and the universe reclines in my hair once more.

Their over the top style was both a blessing and a curse as it gained them a lot of initial notoriety which helped their first album get attention, but so many assumed that they were all style and no substance that they were overlooked as a seriously talented band, which they were. If they hadn't had the style thing going they might have had some deserved longevity. Unfortunately for them, they became synonymous with '80s-extreme and their music was largely ignored, subsequently becoming a cliche...

I did not know to much about them, until a video series called One Hit Wonderland covered their career, and they seemed interesting at first, until the original Guitarist left. Beyond I Ran, I really enjoy Space Age Love Song
