WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE ROLL THE BONES?

Lol that album is pure cheese...I am proud to say I love it! Maybe not quite like my love for AFTK but still...shame most people think thats the best Toto album. Its average at best by their own standards. Tambu is a very beautiful and bombastic pop rock album, and Kingdom Of Desire verges on heavy metal. My favourite, Fahrenheit, is embarrassingly '80's pop, but I think its one of my top ten albums. In the early 90's, Toto bettered Rush. Not for long though.

Opinions are like buttcracks. We all have one.

To be honest I didn't even know Toto put out much after Toto IV. You didn't hear much about them after that. I'll check those other ones out.

They put out seven more albums, at least. I recommend the latest, Falling In Between as its first three tracks are proggy and very heavy. And Tambu is a very tribal sounding rock album. And Kingdom Of Desire is a harder edged classic. Isolation through to The Seventh One are instant classics.

Man, I can't wait for your inevitable "U Can't Touch This pulverizes The Gates of Delirium" post.

:P

Now :rush: Forum'ers....... That was officially a GOOD 1 !!!!!!! :LMAO: :hail:

Ok...I prefer Tambu to both Roll The Bones and Presto. I like Kingdom of Desire more than Counterparts. I think Mindfields is superior to Test For Echo. In the eighties, only Fahrenheit stands out, and even then I think Rush tops that. And Fahrenheit is my favourite Toto album. Toto are really, really good. People smirk, but then my friends laugh at me for loving Rush so its all cool!!

But when it comes to it, give me Toto over Rush when it comes to the nineties. If I was to proclaim IV as being greater than Hemispheres, then I know I am in trouble!

I really liked it when it first came out, and still enjoy mnay of the songs. I think, like T4E, it just didn't age well with me. I feel that way about A Farewell to Kings & Hemispheres side 1 also, so take it for what it's worth.

My only problem with the album is it's sound quality, it is very underplayed, much like Presto. The difference between the two is amount of likable songs. While there are only two meh songs on Presto for me, Roll the Bones has four. If only more of the album had the energy of Dreamline. Roll the bones is not my least favorite, but it is in the bottom 5

Sound quality was definitely improved on the remastered version.

The production is thin, the songs are weak, cheesy, but it's also part of why I love Rush.. They felt strongly about it, and did what they wanted.. And honestly , it's better than what most bands would release in their career, but Rush have a pretty f*ckin stellar catalogue.. The standards are high..a song like face up is embarrassing

My mother was right after all. I didn't have to say it...

I may have to check this out. How's the re-mastered Presto?

And Face Up is one of the songs I like off the album. One again, there you go.

From YouTube comments on the song (which I am listening to right now):

IMO, this is a gem of the catalog (it has to be the best short solo from Lerxst), but I still maintain that it would have been better had it been saved for Counterparts (even though, of course, this was the song that got Neil thinking about the role that chance plays in our lives and thus provided the theme to Roll the Bones ): it would have really benefitted from a thicker, heavier guitar sound.

SM, BTW.... My comment about Roll The Bones on the other thread meant no harm. I simply said I prefer Pornography to Roll The Bones... I can't help the fact that I'm a Cure fan.... :sarcastic:

Ooohhh...lol I got the impression this was a really hated album having come across many posts bashing this...and I could not picture you being a Cure fan. I am well impressed! Still need to get me some Yes however...

And as for the person who dismisses my taste as a Toto fan...lets just say I am content. They were more than three hit singles. Just play Falling In Between, Tambu and the very heavy (for the genre) Kingdom Of Desire. For me, Toto and Rush are almost equals, when Toto are at their peak. Fahrenheit is one of my all time favourite albums, as is Tambu and Isolation. Nothing wrong with brilliantly played, anthemically written and uplifting cheese rock. They do it better than anybody else.

Sorry if I am agitated, I am cooking for friends who I see tomorrow and its gonna be way past midnight when I am done. I am not sure if I am coming across nicely or aggressively! I take few shortcuts when it comes to cooking.

Whatcha cookin' that takes so long?

I like it too. It seemed like a throwaway at first. It sort of snuck up on me with its catchiness, ha.

That I don't know. Presto is my least favorite album so I haven't heard it. I just downloaded a couple of songs off of TFE from the remastered version and there's a noticeable difference.

My mother taught me if you have nothing nice to say, to say nothing at all...... :)

My mom tried to teach me that. I told her that was a stupid idea.

It's a nice sentiment but not very practical..... :)

I don't hate RTB. The title track has some good music, even if the lyrics are a little preachy here and there and the vocal melodies awkward in spots. It's a fun song live. Dreamline is good and Bravado. . . .well, that's a favorite of mine. Neurotica is probably the worst on the album.

I have to say even though it's not my favorite era, If Bravado live doesn't bring chills and goosebumps, you may want to check your purse or wallet for your :rush: card. You may find it missing....... :) Edited by Narpet

If I had a chance to actually see Bravado on this tour I might say it gave me Goosebumps. But I've gotta say that The Pass brought enough chills.

I love Roll the Bones, but I have to be careful to not be hypocritical, as I spent a few posts bashing T4E.

I know RTB doesn't have good production, and I know that the album has some filler.

But, (and this is quite ironic), it was my gateway album - the first one I owned (though I was already familiar with the hits that came before and the Moving Pictures album.)

So, in a way, it was the album that made me fall in love with Rush.

But…

…all the filler on the album kept me from really getting into Rush back in the '90s. I figured most their albums probably had some good songs and some bad songs, so I didn't bother buying others.

How wrong I was. But it took me a long time to realize it.

So, the good... Dreamline, Ghost of a Chance (my favorite Rush lyrics), The Big Wheel, Where's My Thing and the title track are all excellent (I did hate the rap at first, though. Now I barely remember that it was a weird departure). I love Face Up. Excellent lyrics, killer guitar solo. It will eternally baffle me why most don't like it.

The not so good...

The mix is weak. Thank goodness for customizable equalizer settings in iTunes. I can give the sound a little more weight.

I like Bravado, just not as much as others do. It just seems to end before it gets going. I definitely had an easier time "getting" this song when I heard the live version on Different Stages.

Heresy comes close to being pretty good. I enjoy it. Neurotica and You Bet Your Life are just average at best. I can see why others find them to be mediocre. For me, they are good enough that I don't feel animosity toward them (in other words, they don't get skipped).

Always a soft spot for my first Rush album.

If only it sounded better...it's so thin. I do like a lot of it though. The first three songs are great, I've softened up to Face Up, WMT is the bomb, The Big Wheel is solid. Heresy, Ghost, and Neurotica are all good tracks, and You Bet Your Life isn't even too bad.

It's not my favorite album, but I do think it's solid all the way through.
