I think you've got most of them listed there somewhere...

Moon was a really good movie.

I saw Moon based on people in TRF suggesting it. I thought it was a really good movie, but I personally wouldn't list it among sci-fi's all time best.

I must admit a serious reluctance on my part to watch any movie pre-late 60's. I've tried, but I just find them so dated that I have a hard time relating to them. Then again, I've read plenty of pre-late 60's sci-fi books that I've loved, so maybe I'd be able to enjoy some of those movies without being too caught up in goofy dialogue and archaic attitudes.

Regarding a couple of other choices of yours, ones based on books:

Soylent Green - I read the book the movie was based on many, many years ago, but unfortunately never saw the movie - I need to one of these years. Then again, I have vague memories of some of that movie, so it's possible I saw it, or maybe just parts of it.

Fahrenheit 451 - I've read the book several times, but have never seen the movie. Does it hold up to the book?

1984 - The movie was really good, but I found it pretty disappointing compared to the book.

Let me add to my list a movie that for some reason most people don't like:

Bicentennial Man

I thought that was a really great movie.

Also, I really enjoyed A.I. - it's an odd movie and has a truly odd and unexpected ending, but I thought it was pretty great.

I'm curious Goob, how did Generations top Undiscovered County, First Contact AND 2009 in your book? I can understand 2009 may not be your cup of tea if you prefer old school trek but how does it top almost every other even numbered star trek (the exception being nemesis)?

Star Trek 2009 IS in my list. And I could have easily put First Contact. Really, I sincerely enjoyed all of the TNG movies except the one with borg wasn't as good. Any of those could have, and perhaps should have gone on my list. I'm not much of a fan of The Undiscovered Country, however. It wasn't "bad," but I didn't love it. Of the original cast, I really only thought the 2nd and 4th movies (and Generations, which had some of both casts) were particularly successful.

I've often seen this cited as one of those "it's so bad, it's good" movies, which is a sub-genre of badness that I find hard to watch since I quit drugs many years ago. Is it truly enjoyable? The closest I've come to this movie is seeing Ed Wood...

How about Metropolis from 1927?...that's a classic

I understand your aversion to the older films. Most are cheesy, but a few are brilliant. Forbidden Planet has unbelievable special effects - it was a ground-breaking film. The cast was first rate as well.....

Farenheit 451 is rather slow paced, but still good, IMO. It's good for when you're in an intellectual mood.

Soylent Green is GREAT. Edward G. Robinson (Sol Roth) almost steals the film from Charlton Heston. Chuck Connors is an awesome villain. Sol Roth's death scene has to be rated in the top-10 in all of film history.

Sadly, Edward G. Robinson was dying of cancer when he made the film, and he told only Heston about it. He told Heston right before they were to film his character's death scene, so Heston would be genuinely moved to tears. Robinson died 12 days after the film was completed. sad.gif sad.gif

Tons of great movies already mentioned so I wont repeat them.

Will add one to the list that I really enjoyed (saw it multiple times on the big screen and have it on DVD).

Stargate

It gave birth to a TV series that I really liked (SG-1). The other Stargate series ranged from ok (Atlantis) but nothing really good to (the last one) total 062802puke_prv.gif The less said about that one the better.

Also, did anybody mention Starship Troopers? The 1st one was ok.

It's intensely aweful....It's not so bad it's good, it's so bad it sucks out loud....It's one of those things you watchg just to say you've watched it but almost every minute is a living hell and you wish you could share a grave with Bela Lugosi just to end the agony.
