Moonrise Kingdom.... not sure what to make of this one. I didn't love it, didn't hate it, just kept saying to my wife "this is strange"

I didn't like it at all, romantic comedy fantasy for kids, blargh! I watched it because Norton, Willis and Murray were in it.

Yeah, same reason I got it. I really didn't have much of an opinion on it other than "it's strange" - can't say I liked it though.

That's the only reason I watch Wes Anderson's pretentious hipster fests. They have great casts. I feel about hipsters the same way Cartman feels about hippies.

I'm so over South Park references.

Oz, the Great and Powerful. Respectable attempt. Excellent visuals and some good laughs but lacks the 'wonder' bit.

I just saw this last evening myself. A very enjoyable adventure, not perfect but it was more hit than miss to me. As far as the "wonder" I've seen that word thrown around a lot does anybody really believe that an idea already known for over seventy years can be a wonder a second time?

True fact the original Wizard of Oz was a theatrical flop. It wasn't until it hit television that it became a darling of American audiences.

That's interesting...I haven't read any reviews so I haven't seen the word 'wonder' tossed about. And yes, I think an idea that's been around for decades can still generate awe and excitement. Think about popular characters and other fictional works...especially fantasy novels.

George V. Higgins story = lots of random, rambling and innocuous dialogue. There's an ok story in there but like a Higgins novel you have to wade through the talky crap to get to it. I don't like how this was shot either, a lot of important scenes were ruined by the director trying to make a "cool" picture with an annoying slow-mo shooting death or whatever.

This was better than I thought it would be, not bad.

Note to self (for the 325,678th time): hot women do not necessarily = good film

I see your point but I was mainly talking about rehashes in film. I've read several reviews mentioning that "Oz" lacked the wonder of the original. That being said I found it enjoyable enough I hope there is at least on more prequel type like this before they try and tackle The Wizard of Oz..

Just finished it, I almost forgot Nicholas Cage could act once upon a time.

At least the Coens still make great movies. Looking forward to that folk rock movie of theirs. As for Cage, the one where he actually gave a damn was The Weather Man. Apart from Drive Angry being a guilty pleasure (Fichtner steals the movie) and his Kick Ass supporting role, he's become a parody of himself.

He sounds a little restrained in The Croods, though.

Lately I've been finding older films that my seventeen year old hasn't seen yet and came up with this one last night. I think Blake Edwards is terrific.

There are quite a few films in which Cruise is singing at least some kind of ditty: Magnolia, Jerry Maguire, War of the Worlds, Vanilla Sky, etc.

Interestingly, the most famous Cruise singing scene is one in which he doesn't even sing...that Risky Business dancing in undies bollocks. And he would've been singing in Eyes Wide Shut but he was too busy trying to get laid in every scene
