Okay, so The Beatles are the "greatest band in history". But could they PLAY their instruments? Listen what they did with The Beatles We Can Work It Out. This does have a little intro too, which The Beatles could never have done, even with Sir George Martin.

Deep Purple

Fab Four:

I do think that it bears mentioning that the Beatles seem to be the baseline of comparison for all these "greatest" polls. That says a little something about them as artists, song writers and musicians, methinks.

Beatles take this one hands down...2 very different bands,

eras, etc. DP had their moments though,no question.

Two of my favorite songs from both bands?

The Beatles: I Want You/She's So Heavy

( GREAT Rockin' tune from Abbey Road)

Anyone that says Paul McCartney can't play

bass..is 5 cans short of a 6'er.

Deep Purple: Highway Star

( This song kicks it into high gear..then precedes

to roll on down the road..fast..real fast ! )

McCartney is actually a great bass player. He's not Steve Harris or Geddy when it comes to speed, but he seldom just follows the guitar, making it pretty hard to pick up Beatles' songs by ear. The fact that all of them (save Ringo) played multiple instruments credibly enough to do so on record speaks volumes about how talented they were.

I like both the Ian Gillan and David Coverdale fronted versions of DP alot. But this is a blowout.

For my ears it's Paul and then George. Both are great players. Most people love Lennon, I can't relate although I do respect what he did for rock 'n roll. I hate his solo stuff. Then again I hate Yoko Ono even more.

Ringo did the job. A basic timekeeper who could write a few good songs.

Paul McCartney is beyond a Legend. The man is still touring and I am soooooooo glad I saw him in SF last year. The guy still has it and I hope there is no retirement in sight for the man.
