Drive My Car and Helter Skelter - listen to that Bass!!!

By the way - The Beatles or sliced bread?

doesn't Helter Skelter's bass line pretty much stay on the root of the chord like 90% of the time?

my favorite Beatles bassline has to be in Something. the way the bassline and the rest of the instrumentation play off each other is truly genius writing (and everything about the song is absolutely gorgeous too).

EDIT: wait a minute, whoever said the beatles don't have good basslines is on f***ing meth. listen to anything from Rubber Soul or later (and even some stuff from before)...all the instrumentation is genius, bass included. you might have to listen to the 2009 remasters to actually be able to hear it, but it's there and it's awesome.

Paul McCartney was the TRUE leader of The Beatles. yes.gif applaudit.gif

When The original Bass player, Stu Sutcliff died,

in 62, Paul took over on bass..neither John or George

wanted to switch from guitar to bass, so Paul SACRIFICED

his guitar playing career (at least on the road) so that the

band would carry on....That's TRUE leadership, boys and girls...

The guy is truly a legend..the greatest Beatle imo.

Paul could play guitar like you wouldn't believe..in fact he

was a better guitarist then either john or george..fact.

Don't believe me? check out the 1st McCartney solo lp,

released in 1970..Paul played all the instruments !...Fact.

He played alot of Beatles studio recording's on guitar,

as well as the bass.

Lennon had unbelievable talent as a musician and lyricist, but Paul

gave up alot for the band..That's one of the reasons , I believe,

why they were elevated , as a band, to such unbelievable iconic

heights..it was karma..give and receive..give away and get back.

The law of the universe..That's my 2 cent's worth on SIR Paul.

It was intended as a pun on another comment. He wasn't being serious, hence the wink.gif

I do think that it bears mentioning that the Beatles seem to be the baseline of comparison for all these "greatest" polls.  That says a little something about them as artists, song writers and musicians, methinks.

The Beatles aren't so great when it comes to bass lines wink.gif

You can make the argument, quite successfully, by the way, that the members of Deep Purple are virtuosos where The Beatles are not. But to state The Beatles couldn't play their instruments is an ill-informed argument.

By the way, Ian Paice and Paul McCartney make a kick-ass rhythm section.

No The Beatles weren't virtuoso musicians by any means but that was pretty much nonexistant in rock & roll when they were formed anyway and they improved as players as time went by. They could hold their own among their contemporaries and certainly paved the way for the development of better musicianship in rock that followed.

The examples of covers of Beatles songs as good or better than their original versions are few and far between and Purple's simply aren't. The Beatles and Deep Purple each had their own particular strengths and characteristics that were distinctly their own. Of course, The Beatles were more important and influential in terms of rock history but I enjoy Purple just as much. DP from '69-'73 was the better live band. The bottom line is that they're both among the best rock bands ever. No vote from me.

'Rain', 'The Word' and 'You Never Give Me Your Money' is some great bass playing.
