Yes, they're pretty rare. I'm trying not to think about how much I spent on it - I'm just getting on with enjoying it. I found it with the help of someone else who really appreciates Rickenbackers (especially doublenecks), who knew I was looking for one and helped me enormously. It was actually advertised on the web, believe it or not. Edited by Jon

At last, after a long search, I've managed to pick up one of these:

1982 Rickenbaker 4080/12 MG

I had lots of help tracking this down and having it shipped over here. Now I'm broke, but very happy and ready to do Xanadu smile.gif .

Another Ricky for your collection! biggrin.gif new_thumbsupsmileyanim.gif

I don't want to post after seeing that sweet Rick 4080/12! That's sweet!

Anyways, here's my "rig". (sarcastic...)

Bass:

Squier Precision Bass (either a '99 or '90)

Amp:

Fender Rumble 15W (just got it yesterday!)

Effects:

Zoom 506 (very old-school)

I tried out a Jazz Bass at the store for the first time- WOW! Beautiful tone! Even though I'd rather have a Rickenbacker.... I love their low-end!

I'm the proud owner of a Geddy Lee fender jazz bass, got it used for $350 with a hardshell case. the pickguard is missing and i still haven't replaced it, kinda like the way it looks with out one. I also have a squire p-bass that isn't really worth talking about, but it does the job.

My only amp at the time is a crate which i'm pretty sure is a keyboard amp....

'Hokay...

-Fender Jazz, Mexican made.

- Cheap-ass old Epiphone, aka "the Black Bomber", parked due to wiring

problems and destruction from a dumb drunken singer.

-Spectra 312 amp.

-Boss distortion pedal.

Bass:

Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass (with a pickguard)

Amp:

120watt Crate (which is a guitar amp, but i like my bass to sound guitarish (like geddy's in Rio (and it does!)))

Effects:

If I'm not mistaken, this makes TWO 4080s for you! You're extremely lucky to have those incredible instruments.

Yeah, Jon now has both versions of the 4080: the 4080/6 and the 4080/12. I'm amazed you managed to find the 4080/12 as there were only a handful of those made. The 4080/6 is pretty rare itself, but the /12 is nearly impossible to come by.

Let me know if you ever want to part with one of them, I'll gladly take them off your hands for you.

as for my basses I own a geddy spec 1972 jet-glo Rickenbacker, along with a 1977 fretless Precision bass, and a geddy spec 89 mexican jazz bass with the maple/big block neck.

for amplifiers I have a small Fender 15 watter practice amplifier and I have a stage rig that is an Ampeg SVT classic head and cabinet. I have multieffects that give a closer and distinct geddy sound, the BP50 bass pedal multi-fx I use is for the Precision and Jazz bass because I cant recreate the Rick sound. The Rick gets the best geddy sound because I run it stereo to the ampeg for the bottoms and use an old Holmes guitar amplifier for the highs that way it doesnt get clipped off. Gives me a great mid rangey sound and has the perfect balance to create a good geddy sound.

you know that the first 4080 off the line was given to Geddy as a present? had the jet glo one and the white one, the white one I believe was the 4080/6 and the jet glo was the 4080/12. I may be wrong but thats for sure

Yes Syaoran_2001, the 12s are extremely rare. It was a long and difficult search and I was very fortunate that the biggest 4080 collector was kind enough to tip me off about it, rather than buy it himself!

Crockettsonny84, if Geddy was presented with the first 4080, it wasn't the Jetglo or the white one. My Burgundy 4080 is older than both of those. How do I know this? The first 4080 was made in 1975 (the same year as my Burgundy), but in late 1976, Rickenbacker changed the design slightly & both of Geddy's match the later design.

So, can anybody spot what was changed?

I'd love to see your '72 4001 Crockettsonny84. Full width inlays and chequerboard binding?

Good try, but that's not it. The six string headstock stayed the same on the later models. If you look closely, there is another difference in the photographs though.

Oh...is it the bridge for the bass neck? They look slightly different...
