CygnusX-1Bk2
Glockenspiels are high octave and made of hard metal. It translates to "Bell Set" in German. Xylophone is a general term for a wooden tuned percussion instruments not necessarily chromatically laid out (like a piano keyboard). In modern western music though a xylophone is laid out this way, but there are several types of xylophones that are not. They have a sharp wooden sound generally. A Marimba is a xylophone laid out in a chromatic fashion and has the widest octave range available. Marimbas (or marimbaphone) have a softer darker tone than a standard xylophone. A Vibraphone or "Vibes" are made of aluminum with butterfly valves that rotate inside the resonator tubes that channel the sound of the keys (Marimbas and some xylophones have resonators) giving a vibrato effect that give vibes their distinctive sound. Somewhere tonally between a xylophone and marimba.

goose
Found a good deal on a Tama Starclassic set...so now I have two. I've blended the two for the time being, but i think the Tama set more suits my needs. the DW sounds amazing in comparison, though.

2112rushfan1
Check out this amazing drummer! This is my son, 13 years old. He does Rush drum covers on YouTube, and like myself, all he wants as fellow Rush fans is respect. He considers himself the biggest 13 year old Rush fan in the US! Check out his drum cover of the "New World Man" from the 1982 Signals album! If you get a chance, maybe even check out some others! He has tons! apetersvt
Got a couple of cymbals today for my beginner's drum set which I got about a year ago. One of those 5 piece with hardware and cymbals for $300 type kits. Anyway, those cymbals definately sucked. Can't wait to get home and try them out. Got a Ziljdian ZHT crash and Zildjian A ride. Don't know anything about drums, but both of them sounded damn good without spending an arm and a leg (like I have done with guitars).

edm2112
UPDATE (cue Robert Stack)....Added a 20" kick drum as a deep gong drum, lucked out and scored a used 22" Paragon ride cymbal (and man does it sound AMAZING) minor shifting around to get some additional cymbals on the kit with the limited stands at my disposal...ready to get some covers recorded soon. http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2859/9362621696_b1e1c98cf0_o.jpg
CygnusX-1Bk2
I think the Paragon ride only comes as a 22". :) They are great! It's almost an old Zildjian Ping (what Neil used when he was still with Zildjian). Very close tonally. My Ping is from the 80s and still sounds good but after almost 30 years (next year) it does have a little more build up than it used to. I keep the Paragon in the studio and use the Ping for gigs. Love the Paragon splashes too. Highly recommended.
edm2112
Been tinkering around with different mics around my kit....found some videos of people who have made their own SubKick (transducer) mic...seemed simple enough...take a 6 to 8in woofer and solder a 1/4" or XLR cable to the terminals (in reverse...eg...negative to positive and vice versa) and thats it. Some people mount them in drum shells to get that SubKick look...i left mine just the bare speaker and it worked surprisingly well. Like really surprisingly well. The woofer i used was a super cheapo 6" one from an old car stereo box...not bad for a great sounding mic that cost me nothing to make....I noticed Neil uses a similar setup (bare speaker and all) with the thousands of mics that seem to be on his kit in the studio. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3766/9522270872_8fe6fb7429_n.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7288/9519496369_081b0558fc_n.jpg Heres a bit of a demo of how it improves the sound when blended with a dynamic mic inside the kick...really captures the low end that i love...its not a Rush tune (i know), and im not sure what the general consensus of Dubstep is, but i just wanted to record something quick and knock out a cover video at the same time...(headphones or good speakers recommended) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU2EAKYM2gA
