So I cracked my 16 in B8 crash playing the other day. I was going to upgrade just the one but decided to take in all my cymbals and just upgrade. I got an A custom pack on clearance for around $600 with the extended warranty after I traded mine in. Considering it's over $800 worth of cymbals separate without tax and extended warranty it's not too bad. Anyway i'm down a few cymbals for now but they sound better. I'm still using the B8 splash for now as well as the XS20 china. But I have a 18 in A custom fast crash, 16 in A custom crash, 14 in A custom hats and 20 in A custom medium ride. Sounds a lot better than my old B8's for sure.

You got that right......fewer is better when you have quality.

I have Sabian cymbals, and I don't have many, but I got QUALITY and I got a STEAL on every one of them, mostly thru eBay.

From left to right on my kit:

Sabian 14" AA Thin Crash

Sabian 13" AA Fusion Hats

Sabian Hand Hammered 18" China

Sabian Signature Virgil Donati 17" Saturation Crash <== common001.gif

Sabian 10" AAX Splash

Sabian 18" AA Thin Crash

Sabian 21" Hand Hammered Raw Bell Dry Ride <== common001.gif

As the budget allows, yes. yes.gif

Oh...don't get me wrong...

My bad for not qualifying my statement...better to have few great, than many not so great.

Hey, your tom mounts are upside down and on the bottom hoop. The angles are a bit severe too.

It's not that different from my Gretsch Renown maples. It's all about the bearing edges and Gretsch are highly sought. These and the PDP are the least expensive maple shell kits available and are very high quality for the price. Do they sound like the top of the line Gretsch and DW kits? Not quite, but do the top of the line kits sound thousands of dollars better? No!

You got yourself a very nice kit for an excellent price.

It is rare that drums are made from "exotic" woods. The woods in question concerning guitars is illegal rosewood from Madagascar. Don't think I have ever seen a rosewood drum. Brady uses some exotic woods but the standards are maple, birch, and mahogany.

There you go. As long as you are comfortable. I am not a big fan of steep angles because it changes the way you strike and the bounce back, as well as consistency from drum to drum. I play with my snare drum relatively flat. My toms are almost flat, but angled just slightly because of their elevation. There is an imaginary curved line from my smallest tom to my largest tom and all surfaces are relative to the snare. The biggest difference for me is between my concert and closed toms. The concerts are angled a slight more for access above the hat.

I have actually reduced the angle a bit since then because I no longer use the rack. I need to take newer pics with my nice camera.

I have as a matter of fact seen many rosewood snare drums. Not made by big name companies of course but by smaller custom companies. I'm also on a forum that's all custom builders though. It's pretty cool to see what people come up with that aren't just cookie cutter kits that the big companies push out. Not knocking my kit or anyone elses on here, just saying there are more possibilities than the 6 finishes the companies allow you to pick. Also nice Gretsch kit. I had a really hard time deciding between my PDP kit and a Gretsch Maple Renown. The Gretsch had a great kick but I preferred the toms on the PDP. Also I am more of a fan of the PDP mounting system, allows for a little bit tighter mounting.
