Mr. Not
QUOTE (treeduck @ Jun 17 2010, 12:14 AM) QUOTE (peoplecanteatmachinefood @ Jun 16 2010, 08:45 PM)Uh, what yodeling? The yodels are in bold. I like that song about this wonderful world It's got a sunny point of view And sometimes I feel it's true At least for a few of us I like that world, it makes a wonderfulsong But there's a darker point of view But sadly just as true For so many among us I like that show where they solve all the murders An heroic point of view It's got justice and vengeance too At least so the story goes I like that story, makes a satisfying case But there's a messy point of view That's sadly just as true For so many among us For so many among us So basically you just don't like it when he suddenly hits a high note. ...Thanks to this thread I've listened to this song about 5 times today

Some Half-Forgotten Stranger
QUOTE (treeduck @ Jun 16 2010, 03:53 PM) The chorus to this song is pretty good, but the yodelling in the verses makes me cringe a bit... Me too, and in The Good New First as well.
Presto-digitation
Like I say, I don't mind it....can listen to it...and it was different for Geddy then. That said I don't miss it either. It seemed to work on some level with the more folksy acoustic nature of Bravest Face, I will say that. I can't say that in a hard rocker that that would fit at all, so at least he did it in the proper song for it....

Todem
The off key...or cracking voice (yodel) in this song is what gives the verses some character and of course was done on purpose. I think a couple of them were really off and they left it because of that. Aquired taste I guess for this song...but to me it works great and the chrous and guitar solo are top notch on this tune....very powerful. Funky Chicken
I'm a fan. I like the "demo" feel of the verses, I like the progression, I like Neil's little splash cymbal "choke" before the second verse.
druid13
the yodeling is still a bit better thatn the farty sounding "blam blam ba-blam blam ba-blam" Riff-Fart repetition found in Peacable Kingdom...now that gets tough to listen to after awhile. SpiritOfRush
I personally like this song. And I think, IMO, the "yodeling" thing is far worse in Good News First (probably my least fave from S&A).
bigalfan
Voice-cracking only works in country music for me. Garth Brooks? Fine. Geddy Lee? No!

GeddyRulz
In my opinion, this is one of the two worst songs on S&A, the other being "Good News First." These two songs are practically... ahem... "filler."

Presto-digitation
Well it's probably not technically a yodel. It is a falsetto type note raise...and I'm pretty sure you don't hear it on any other all-original Rush studio album except for S&A. It's unique. I'm not sure -- like it/love it/indifferent about it -- how you could miss it though. Edited June 17, 2010 by Presto-digitation

I don't hate the song either, but the yodels make me go i really like the song and honestly can't hear what you guys are hearing. sometimes if you listen to too much of one group it's not a good thing because you burn out and than become overly critical. maybe because i don't listen to rush every single day of my life, i think it gives you a clear mind and ear when listening. anyway, one man's garbage is another's treasure. i listen to about a million bands a week pal, I hadn't listened to snakes for months till yesterday...
