Watt
For me, the answer runs "Black Sabbath" because two of the three favourite rock singers of mine, Gillan and Dio, contributed to the success of the band Never cared about IM, only one song they got to which I'd listen more than once. treeduck
I still think of Bruce Dickinson as that bloke out of Samson, singing songs like BRIGHT LIGHT!! And now the Samson singer has had his hair cut off... Get back to Samson Bruce and maybe your hair will grow back...

MULTIPLIED REACTION
At least you know what Dickinson is talking about today. A new born baby is easier to comprehend than Ozzy these days.

Dio is probably the greatest metal singer of all time. But for overall talent, songwriting, arrangements, lyrics... Maiden by miles.

We usually agree, GR, but this time I beg to differ. I love Maiden and I think Steve Harris is a terrific songwriter, a genius on his own, but when you talk about songwriting and arrangements... well, I think about the jazzy pieces in War Pigs, the acoustic change in Symptom of the Universe, the intricacies in Spiral Architect... Sabbath at their best (first five albums + Dio era + the odd song here and there) had their greatest strenghts in songwriting and arrangements... IMHO of course... Rush Cocky
I could go with either really, but I'm really in love Maiden right now, so that gets my vote!!!
Texas King
Iron Maiden are among my fave bands, but they would be a wrong pick in this contest.Black Sabbath all the way. Master of Reality easily beats any Maiden album, no matter how is it great(even Powerslave). :)

Stormtron
Eight years later and I've changed my vote. Sabbath and it's not even close now.
Entre_Perpetuo
It's close, but Maiden have one major fault and Sabbath do not. Maiden are incredibly samey. If you've heard one Maiden song, to a loose extent you now have an idea of them all, with some exceptions. Sabbath weren't like this. Side one of Paranoid reflects this best. War Pigs is nothing like Paranoid, is nothing like Planet Caravan, is nothing like Iron Man. Sabbath wins this for me, but I do love Maiden. Rick N. Backer
If we're talking just the Ozzy and Dio eras of Sabbath, it's Sabbath by miles. If Sabbath is going to have to carry the Gillan, Hughes, Gillen and Martin eras on its back, then it's still Sabbath, but it's a little closer.
