Rush background vocals

First, I want to apologize if this comes across as though I don't appreciate Rush, in fact it's quite the opposite. But I find one thing a bit strange and I feel like I should post it here: Rush's background vocals in (recent) live shows/DVDs. I mean musically, Rush is awesome, but I cringe everytime, Alex Lifeson comes up to the mic and you either hear nothing or the samples of Geddy's background vox. This leads me to believe that either

.) he (Alex Lifeson) is lip-syncing

.) the mic's not on

I mean surely, the guy must know how to sing, right? How much more awesome would Rush be if they had harmonies a la Queen???

If you ever get the chance, download the bootleg "One Big Victory". You can clearly hear alex, some of it is good. Some of it is not so.

Also, check out that site, that bit of the page has a few mp3's of alex singing.

He definately sings. That is for sure. And When i went to SnA at glasgow, you could hear him sing.

I think that he gets put really low in the mix on the DVD's and then the "Geddys" get put over him in the mix.

A little known fact is that Lerxsts singing voice sounds absolutely identical to Geddy's, so you have to look verrrrrry closely to see who is actually singing.

Laugh if you want, but that's the best I have ever heard him sound.

He's a horrible singer.

Samples are right here. (Just scroll down to "odd vocals: Alex sings.)

I love Alex, but he should just stick to playing guitar. Go w/ your strengths.

All of the vox I heard when I saw them on the last two tours were Geddy for sure. It's even more evident on the DVD's.

eh who cares?

And FWIW, I'll not criticize as I sound like a broken fog horn being crammed up the south end of a north bound moose when I sing....

Of course all IMHO.........

But he sure looks like he's having a ball in that clip. Good thing he's a stellar guitarist.

(who am I to say tho, I can't sing or play guitar)

There's a whole audio bootleg from the T4E tour of just Alex vocals. IIRC they honed on to his mic with a CB radio or a scanner, whatever that is, or something to that effect. I might be just making that part up. Edited by Grace2Grace

LOL, has his voice got any better in the last 6 years?

And good for him. Background vocals are hard to hear at a live show and most of the time they sound like crap. Even a band like Van Halen, known for their perfect background harmonies, sound pretty weak in concert. Thats the first thing a band will fix before releasing a live performance. It is very hard to sing competently whilst playing a guitar riff. Your breathing just gets all messed up.
