Here's how I rank them (at least for now). How would you guys rank them? 1. Moving Pictures 2. 2112 3. Hemispheres 4. Permanent Waves 5. A Farewell To Kings 6. Grace Under Pressure 7. Test For Echo 15. Rush 16. Hemispheres 17. Fly By Night . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . 18. Caress of Steel Permanent Waves was the toughest one to slot... Freewill, TSOR and Natural Science are fantastic, but the other 3 tracks just don't do much for me. I couldn't rank the album as a whole higher when I only listen to half of it. 2 Soups Posted April 8, 2008 Share Posted April 8, 2008 1. Snakes & Arrows - The first time I heard S&A, it knocked me on my arse. I love it! To me, the boys are better than ever! 2. Moving Pictures - This is the album that blazed a whole new path for them. 3. 2112! - NUFF SAID!! 4. A Farewell To Kings - Takes me off the planet earth on a stellar voyage. 5. Vapour Trails - Opening drums to One Little Victory blew me away, plus it was a welcome and emotional return; I was soooo glad they were back. 6. Presto - Just love the songwriting on Presto. 7. Hemispheres - Had this on Red vinyl when I was about 16...spent hours learning how to play along to it on guitar. (plus it had that cool poster inside!) 8. Counterparts - Cool songs with a bit of an edge and some fiery playing...reminds me of...Eric Johnson on 1 cut... 9. Hold Your Fire - Love the sound of this album, Neil's snare has a really nice crisp crack to it. Any album with Aimee Mann on it gets my stamp of approval. 10. Test For Echo - I think Neil's re-invented drum technique has positive influences on this one. 11. Fly By Night - Memories, memories.... who is this awesome drummer? (I was thinking back then) 12. Roll The Bones - Some very cool stuff on here - Bravado is an all time fave of mine. 13. Rush - Great stuff; in hindsight, the drumming is a little pedestrian, but a great intro to our favorite band. 14. Grace Under Pressure - For me, Red Sector A is worth the price of admission alone. 15. Permanent Waves - I have great memories of this album...first moving away from home and going to Art College...but it marked a direction that was not quite what I expected. 16. Signals - They almost lost me on this album...I still love it ('cause it's Rush) but hey...how ya gonna follow up Moving Pictures??) 17. Power Windows - I was waiting for more Sci-fi, I guess....but still has its great points. 18. Caress Of Steel - Many good points to this too and a stepping stone album, no doubt. I know you're asking about studio albums, but just for fun I have to do the live albums too...! Live Albums - 1. Rush in Rio 2. All The World's A Stage 3. R30 (from R30 DVD) 4. Different Stages 5. Exit Stage Left 6. Grace Under Pressure (from Replay X3 DVD set) 7. A Show of Hands (did I miss any?... ) Sorry for being long-winded, but I thought it would be fun to throw some comments in there... ! Cheers! I like different albums for different reasons and it wouldn't be fair to rank them because I could have ten different lists if I ranked them by ten different criteria. When I'm really in the mood for Hold Your Fire I'm not in the mood for Hemispheres and vice versa, it's just hard to compare them. Speaking of "in the mood", the only thing I'm surprised at is how high some people have the first album. I'm not going to argue about it and I respect everyone's opinions but seeing the debut album ahead of Permanent Waves, Grace Under Pressure, Hemispheres, Snakes and Arrows , and Power Windows among others just baffles me.
