It's hard to believe these albums were back to back......

Moving Pictures to Signals

Imagine if this forum existed back then? lol

There must've been some pissed off fans on the day Signals was released.

Yes, I remember those days. It makes all the talk about S&A look like a tea party.

I actually find Signals to be a logical progression from Moving Pictures. I don't know what the diehard fans all thought of it at the time, but retrospectively, it just seems like a no-brainer.

The Hemispheres to Permanent Waves transition was much more of a leap, IMO.

Agreed. That was the first to come to my mind.

What Pedro said is very true. I remember that time fondly. Most Rush fans I knew (as a teenager) were downright pissed. As usual though, over time, most of them came around and Signals became one of the most beloved records of all time from Rush.

Signals to Grace Under Pressure. Not only did the music polarize fans, so did the haircuts!

This is correct. The shift from MP to Signals was miniscule compared to the change imposed upon us by GUP.

Well for me, it was HYF to Presto wink.gif

Yeah, I agree with this one. Roll the Bones to Counterparts was another big leap, CP is so much heavier.

I agree this is a much greater leap!

Hemispheres to Permanent Waves

Less keyboards, (but more prominent), Neil writing with a completely different style, Ged singing in a different register, an end of the acoustics Alex had been building up through all albums prior, and overall a more concise, digestible, and poppier sound. Yea this' certainly the biggest leap in terms of everything.

Signals seems the logical progression from MP the only big change is where the guitar sits in the mix, is that really such a big deal?

True, they go from extended epics to more song-oriented albums.

...Yet I hear a huge similarity in production. Maybe it's just me.

I gotta go with HYF to Presto, as you go from an album with a whole lotta keys to one that scales back the keys quite a bit.

But MP--> Signals is also a drastic transition in the other direction, although MP had quite a bit of keys to begin with. Rather, the Signals album puts the keys up front a lot more than it had been previously.
