5 great Rush albums

PerWaves, a guitar-driven album

MP, in which the cracking of Geddy's basswork impresses me the most

Signals, where Neil's drumming is the most striking, however I must note Alex's guitar seemed to be reined in, featuring 3 songs without a guitar solo

Screaming back in GUP which features a particularly manic guitar sound and I think Alex was quoted as saying this was his favorite Rush album, but it's the synths that move particularly to the fore

And finally PowWin which, at least to me showcases Geddy's singing.

Footnote HYF which features more of everything!

It took me a while to get access to the site and these ideas were stewing in me for a while. Thanks for letting me get them off my chest!

I forgot to mention PowWin features Neil's drumming pushed back in the mix, I hope some day it could be remixed with the drums brought back out where they belong

Welcome to the forum!

For me, it's got to be the run from A Farewell to Kings to Signals.  I guess that's six albums . . . but then, numbers (and sometimes dates) don't really count when dealing with Rush.

I'd go with the same five albums as the OP, but HYF represents falling off a cliff for me.

 in regards to HYF

If forced to pick a five-disc run I'd probably start at Hemispheres.

If allowed to cheat by way of a ten-side run I'd take Hemi side 2 thru PWindows side 1.

For me ‘ pinnacle peak ‘ :rush:is

These 7 albums

( I can’t reduce down to just 5 ! )

️ Farewell to Kings

️ Hemispheres

️ Permanent Waves

️ Moving Pictures

️ Signals

️ Grace Under Pressure

️ Power Windows

I also agree with Nova & Goose that

HYF for me was massively disappointing

as was Presto 😕

Roll the Bones was a little better, but it

was Counterparts which finally really excited me again ! :pirate:

I agree that HYF was a disappointment. I also appreciate Hemispheres which I own on vinyl along with Permanent Waves. My other aim was to mark the stand-out instrument on the mentioned albums. Neither Hemispheres nor A Farewell to Kings stand out in that way to me.

At a certain point they stopped making albums that were 90% great and 10% mediocre and started making albums that were 10% great and 90% mediocre.

Zero songs I skip on any album from Kings through Power Windows but Power Windows is my favorite album so by default I'll say my favorite five-album run is Permanent Waves through Power Windows. but no wrong answers with any combination of five from that seven-album period.
