These lists have me constructing my own, which means they have me re-listening to some long-neglected tunes that my brain needed a refresher course on. Never a bad idea. With most of the songs the refreshers didn't change their rankings much, but there are a few songs that did not benefit at all from a re-listen -- they haven't aged well for me and I dropped them way down the list despite them being revered by many of the old-school prog era fans.

You Bet Your Life is the highest I have of what you just killed off, at 80th. I don't dispute any of the criticisms, I know it's loathed by many. I can't explain really why, but I have always really liked that song. 

My ranking is not the order on the album, it's the order of preference on the album.

For sure I would have a different list if I redid it, this list is anywhere from 2-4 years old, and I have not listened to lot of these songs since.   To respond to 73's question about Time and Motion, I don't remember, other than that a lot of T4E sounded like AOR and to me, that's not Rush at its best.  But your comment has motivated me to give it another spin, and I can let you know if I find something in it I may have missed before.

I have no idea what I looked at that gave me that impression. I was so sure I just rechecked your lists and I am completely wrong. I checked Hi_Water's lists to see if I was conflating that with yours- but he shows both ranking every time. 

Whatever I saw, I was out of my mind I guess.

You Bet Your Life is decent but not special.  Basically I agree with you.  Might have a bit higher but no drastic difference

 

Open Secrets is a top 100 song for me.  Don't agree with you on that one.

 

In The Mood - generally I am not in the mood for it.  No major disagreement with your ranking on that song.

 

Time & Motion  - that ranking feel basically about correct.

 

Hand Over Fist - top 100 song for me.  Obviously I would rank it higher.

Again, we're at songs I essentially like now. As I mentioned before this is primarily the "vocals annoy me" section. Vapor Trails, and Snakes to a lesser extent, bothered me vocally more than any other albums. I never liked how Geddy sang Lakeside Park, although I really like the song- don't hate me too much. I know it's immensely popular. 

And and instrumental because although I like every instrumental, most of them can't beat many songs with words. 
 
 

Some interesting ranking's here.

 

Peaceable Kingdom is the 2nd best song on VT.  Which means you have it ranked a bit high here.  Should be a bit lower.  But not unreasonable.

 

Freeze is terrible - much lower in my book.

 

Stars Look Down - another VT dog.  I would rank it lower.

 

Lakside Park is the head-scratcher here.  For me its an easy top 100 song.  Whats not to like?

 

Leave That Thing Alone - glad you ranked it this low.  The song does not do much for me.  In fact, I sort of thought I might be alone in not being thrilled by it.  Basically I agree with your ranking.

I love Grand Designs, second off Power Windows for me. It's a bit overdosed on 80's bells and whistles, I'll admit.  But it's a great song.

Emotion is last off Power WIndows and it's still 89th. 

So we disagree here.

I agree on those two PW tracks, in fact I have them in the same ranking (2nd and last). Emotion Detector has a great Alex solo so that boosts its ranking a bit.

VT is probably the only album I've relistened to and has moved way up in my rankings.  Secret Touch is one of the reasons for it, so I have it much higher, but the rest are about where I have them.

Presto I must respectfully disagree with.  For me its a top 20 song.  Yes - thats correct.  A top 20 song.  Not a typo.

 

Available Light is a top 100 song IMO so I must disagree with you on that ranking.

 

Emption Detector - another top 100 song.  Again, will disagree with you.

 

Take a Friend - no problem with that ranking.

 

Grand Designs - another top 100 song for me.

 

Next please - even though I am in shock over this batch.

For me, Secret Touch is one of the less objectionable songs on VT.  Which means it should be ranked lower then you have ranked it, as opposed to drastically lower.  So I think you have it ranked to high.

 

Totem - basically ok with this ranking.

 

Neurotica - decent song.  Might rank it a bit higher but that are due to the fact their are still songs out there that you have not ranked that I would rank below it.  But basically no drastic difference with you.

 

Spindrift - I would rank this higher.  It might crack my top 100.  Barely.

 

Limbo - no argument with this ranking.

 

Keep them coming.  Looking forward to the next batch.

I actually like the lyrics, "no one gets to their heaven without a fight" has great resonance with me.     But the music is like trudging through quicksand.

 

And I've had plenty of panic attacks, you don't get to 100% on the introversion scale without that!

 

I guess we'll have to settle for Geddy writing about being an impatient cat for a Rush cat song.      That particular song will be rated much higher in this list than the consensus here...

Let the hate flow!    I think I know which of today's picks will get the most hate...

 

Some of these seem a bit high, frankly (looking at you "The Stars Look Down" and "Dog Years"), considering the malpractice of having "Grand Designs" in the previous five.

 

I do like "Armor and Sword," but this isn't like taking a late second-round guy in the first; it probably belongs in the top #115.
