It got me thinking that this great band (in all forms) needed a thread of their own. What are some of your thoughts on their music, shows you've seen, memories, etc. Here's a place to discuss them as a band and as solo artists. http://media.cleveland.com/popmusic_impact/photo/genesis2jpg-7bf7f2bd91aeb914_large.jpg

Nova Carmina
This is an excellent pick for a marathon! For my part, I am a very recent -- as in quarantine/shut-down recent -- convert to Genesis. At my age, I associated Genesis with "Land of Confusion" and "Invisible Touch" from the MTV of my teens, but in response to posts by Entre Perpetuo and Tony R (among others), I thought I should get to know the band better. I started with Seconds Out, and worked my way back to Nursery Cryme -- and it's wonderful! That whole Hackett-era from 1971 to 1977 is so great. I think I've come to the decision that Foxtrot is my favorite album, as it has "Watcher of the Skies," "Time Table," and the awesome "Supper's Ready," which I think belongs with "Echoes" as a truly awesome epic prog accomplishment. The '80s stuff still leaves me cold, but the '70s stuff is so brilliant that I don't feel any diminishing of my fascination for their talent.
chemistry1973
Who’s the guy next to Phil?!?—— Edit - I just looked it up! John Silver! Very cool to include him here. Why not Ray Wilson though? Not to mention Daryl and Chester... Edited July 27, 2020 by chemistry1973

But that’s a great introduction to a dense catalog, including Peter Gabriel’s solo work. The first Gabriel Genesis I heard was “Selling...” and that floored me. I thought everything from the early 70s sounded like shit up to that moment.

Steve Hackett's Genesis Revisited live releases from 2013 to date are also well worth listening to.
custom55
Seeing this thread and because it's too freakin' hot to step outside, I've put on Foxtrot. DUSK is an incredible piece of music.

Entre_Perpetuo
Starting this musical journey with their criminally underrated debut. From Genesis to Revelation (1969) I think it's a perfectly fine album. I have it on vinyl actually. It's just not in the same ballpark as later releases, and comparing them is like apples and oranges.

IMO, great production in the 70s generally sounds better than great production in the 80s, Moving Pictures and Signals aside. There's just a warmth and artistry to much of it I think gets dumped by many 80s records in favor of flash and style.

Nova Carmina
I felt Seconds Out was a great introduction and made me want to hear more, and Wind & Wuthering is a sneaky favorite; so much mood and tone in that album.

bathory
home by the sea 1 and 2 off the s/t, great stuff. invisible touch? maybe domino. once they become indistinguishable from phil's solo stuff it's lame want a good pop song by phil? more fool me, squonk, robbery assault and battery... actually counting out time and lilywhite lilith are closer to the beatles than any of the 80s stuff
