treeduck
I think both are legendary actors. Hopkins is the more gifted chameleon type of actor like a cross between Richard Burton and Alec Guinness. Caine plays himself a lot more although he has a few roles where he plays against type and does an accent. Caine is like a British version of Jack Nicholson. I'll go with the more talented legend though, Hopkins for me.
geezer
What treeduck says is pure wisdom, but Michael Caine got my vote between the two.Sean Connery tops my British list anyway.Tom Hardy my choice in the new generation.
EagleMoon
Anthony Hopkins wins this one easily. He's had better roles for one and he's the better actor.

goose
Sleuth is one of my favorite movies. Hopkins is great, but I'll go with Caine just for sheer volume of films.

Of films by both that I can remember well enough to say "I liked it" or "I didn't like it", Hopkins has an 8-4 record while Caine's 11-4. Hard to say really but I'd give the slight edge to Hopkins. invisible airwave
I was listening to John Fugelsang on his SiriusXM talk show yesterday talking about Sir Tony’s paycheck narration for Transformers and how awful it was and he said what I’ve said to myself all along that this is Caine in Jaws The Revenge all over again but even worse. "I have never seen it, but by all accounts it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific.” I actually saw that JTR on Showtime months ago and he hasn’t missed out on anything. Boring POS sequel. GeddyLeeRoth
Michael Caine wept like six too many times in The Dark Knight trilogy. Blubber blubber blubber. Meanwhile Hopkins kills it as Odin. Actually not for this reason at all, I still go A-Hop.
Relayer2112
Michael Caine loses just because he did "Jaws: The Revenge". I saw an interview with him years later where he said he didn't regret doing that film because it bought him a house. That's a total lack of artistic integrity.
