Tough choice between 72/73/76/77 I tried making a list for 70 or 75, but they didn't match up.

Though 75 did have:

Floyd Wish You were Here

Tull Minstral in the Gallery

Zep Physical Graffiti

Steely Dan Katy Lied

Aerosmith Toys in the Attic

King Crimson USA

Zappa One Size FIts All

Chris Squire Fish Out of Water

Rush Fly by Night & Caress of Steel

72 it is for me!

Unbeatable decade. Can not pick a bad year. Almost went with '75 (Sabotage, Face The Music-ELO, and TWO Rush albums!)

Went with '79. Partially because I turned 13 that year and can remember it. I was just starting to learn about music on my own around that time. Here's my list of goodies from '79...

BOC- Mirrors

ELO- Discovery

Van Halen II

Motorhead- Bomber

Zappa- Sleep Dirt

Scorpions- Lovedrive (Oh yeah!)

Pink Floyd- The Wall

Triumph- Just A Game

Warriors Soundtrack

ZZ Top- Deguello

Maybe I'm captain obvious, but it's interesting how much Rock music changed after the 70's (surely same could be said of 60's, 50's, 80's etc?). Not right at Jan 1, 1980 - there was some hangover (and great albums in 80, 81...); more on that later. All of the bands that I loved changed significantly in the early 80's - Rush significantly by 82 (many consider Signals the inflection point), Zeppelin was done, Yes reformed with a totally new sound, King Crimson reformed with a drastically new sound, Pink Floyd split (for a bit), Tull changed significantly, Kansas changed significantly, Genesis - well, maybe they were already changing, but were fully redone by 83. Van Halen shifted gears by 84,etc, etc. I was a teenager in the 80's, so I suppose I have some nostalgia over music of that decade. However, I always preferred the 70's - from my earliest memory to now!

So, this was more than just "change" it was a mass migration in a different direction. The trend extends beyond the weird bands that I like.

Possible Reasons?

  • Organic change. I think this was more than just bands exploring new directions.
  • Technology - certainly things were evolving which inspired and allowed bands to try new things. This was already happening though.
  • MTV's arrival in 1981 was a watershed moment and possibly the prime mover for this redirection. The market had shifted significantly and a whole new sort of exposure.
  • The advent of thrash metal in the mid-80's probably also prevented some older bands from wanting to be aggressive guitar-driven rock as they could no longer compete to push those boundaries. I guess the 70's had punk and disco - but I can't say that either prevented the bands I dug from doing what they did!
  • All the bands I liked were "dinosaurs" that needed to remain relevant to current trends (I have a hard time accepting this thought - bands I liked were not necessarily trendy in the 70's either!)
  • Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

Thoughts?

Yeah but at least the kid has the excuse of mom & dad forcing him to wear them. And at least he's smiling. It helps.

The hipster is being a hipster by choice

I remember my buddy buying Black Sabbath Master Of Reality the day it came out. We walked into his house and his Mom saw the album cover.

"GET THAT THING OUT OF MY HOUSE, IT'S DEVIL MUSIC"

So I bought it from him and we went to my house to play it. Happy ending.

Sheesh. The most important Rush album + their best live album, my favorite Kiss album, Jailbreak, Dreamboat Annie, AND Bowie?!! That's just too much meat to compete with!

1972 was a prog-rock fan's wet dream.

Close to the Edge, Thick as a Brick, Foxtrot (3 of the top 6 all-time prog albums per progarchives - all in one year!)

Not to mention GG Octopus, ELP Trilogy, Zappa (2 albums), PFM (2 albums), Banco (2 albums)
