Texas King
Which of these two vocalists in the band Deep Purple would you pick?Like both, but for DP it has to be Gillan.
Cyclonus X-1
Gillan. Coverdale did some great work in Purple, but Gillan in his prime Child in Time days was almost unbeatable. Edited January 6, 2017 by Cyclonus X-1
Digital Dad
No. Contest. Sweet Lucy was a dancer But none of us would chance her Because she was a Samurai She made electric shadows Beyond our fingertips And none of us could reach that high She came on like a teaser I had to touch and please her Enjoy a little paradise The log was in my pocket When Lucy met the RocketAnd she never knew the reason why I can't deny it With that smile on her face It's not the kill It's the thrill of the chase Feel it coming It's knocking at the door You know it's no good running It's not against the law The point of no return And now you know the score And now you're learning What's knockin' at your back door Sweet Nancy was so fancy To get into her pantry Had to be the aristocracy The members that she toyed with At her city club Were something in diplomacy So we put her on the hit list Of a common cunning linguist A master of many tongues And now she eases gently From her Austin to her Bentley Suddenly she feels so young

Rick N. Backer
Coverdale by miles. I like Gillan, but as a singer, he's not in Coverdale's class. And give me Burn, Stormbringer and Come Taste the Band over the rest of the DP catalog any day.
thirteen
Gillan. Both were obviously amazing singers in their prime.

It's "real fan." :) And my cred is still intact. If I had said, "Machine Head and FIreball are so overrated" or even better, "I don't like Mk II," you'd have me.

Rick N. Backer
You can't top Machine Head so it's Ian for me. There you go, brother. I don't share your vote, but I applaud you citing Machine Head instead of saying something like, "Bananas is Gillan's best album with Purple."
Ancient Ways
Coverdale is very good but I prefer Gillan. Trashed, highway star, child in time are really good.

I love Burn ( had it on 8-track ) but lost interest in DP after that.

You guys are forgetting about his other 1970 recording, Jesus Christ Superstar. Gillan was Jesus on the original recording of the Webber/Rice rock opera and he was awesome; the vocal range was larger and more demanding than even Deep Purple. It's interesting to listen to and shows off his talent. My sister and I listened to it and admired the voice for years before we put it together and realized that it was the same Ian Gillan . Along with that, you gotta go with Burn, Machine Head, and Made in Japan, I think.

Entre_Perpetuo
Well, based on his astonishing performance on Jesus Christ Superstar, plus Made In Japan, Ian Gillan is a monster vocalist to my ears. Cloverdale's never particularly impressed me in Whitesnake.
