Oh! Watch the documentary "Beyond the Lighted Stage"! It tells the story of the band, and of the people, and will give you a real appreciation for both. It's simply fantastic. Here's the trailer:10 points

What about dreams? Did you dream about the band? That's considered really cool around here.9 points

I am 39, I am a musician, and I love hard rock. Why the hell am i just NOW realizing that this band absolutely KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!! I mean WOW!!! I saw RUSH: Live In Cleveland on VH1 and it was like an epiphany. Luckily I DVR'd it and I can NOT stop watching it now. What is the matter with me? Or should I say......what HAS BEEN the matter with me? Why did it take me this long to realize that these guys are amazing musicians? I have been missing out. But it is better late than never. Now I need someone to guide me into the world of RUSH. What CD's do I buy first? What DVD's should I buy first? I love live performances and from what I understand, and from what I have seen, this band is incredible live. So if someone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.8 points

We had a family get together for my father in laws 80th birthday today at an out of the way, hole in the wall fish house between Myrtle Beach and Charleston SC. True Americana at its best. Spam threads can be great when it's made up of a bunch of random comments, which often spark of fun conversations. It's not so great when it's pages and pages of nothing5 points

I have to say, I envy you. I wish I could go back and rediscover all of their music for the first time all over again. I would recommend Permanent Waves for a starting point. Listen on some good quality headphones5 points

Before anyone jumps in and says you should start with any particular record, I'll say let your own ears guide you. Their catalog is so big that it's impossible for all Rush fans to agree on every single thing Rush. My own Rush journey started with one record at the time. I found one and listened to it, and if I liked it at this particular moment I would buy it. Welcome aboard and have fun :)5 points

I have been seeing quite a few people bashing the Spam threads in lots of other threads lately... so what the deal? Oh yeah, Spam sucks... and it's a cheap way to "level up."4 points

Some might say I have almost 25,000 posts which have much to due with Spam. Nope! It depends how that is defined. My posts always have a purpose and have never been made to drive up a post count. Because really, who f***ing cares how many posts you have to begin with? I like to think I pioneered a culture of strange, weird, obscure, random, and just down right head scratching threads in which I am proud of! I like to think of myself as the George Washington Carver of bizarre!4 points

You're not going to get a consensus on any of this, and Analog Grownup is right about the diversity of Rush's catalogue and the fundamental uselessness of any other fan's opinion regarding forming your own Rush tastes. There's only one really important thing that other fans can tell you, which is to give all Rush records plenty of chances to grow on you. This board is full of stories of people who "never liked" this album or that album, but one day "GOT IT" and fell in love. This even happens with people who have been fans for many years, and thought they were absolutely certain of the material they didn't like. What a rich and wonderful journey you are embarking upon! I'm excited for you. And if you find a good Rush tribute band in the area, let me know!4 points

I would start with the Exist Stage Left CD/DVD. It is the tour that the band made after Moving Pictures, which was the height of their popularity. It has many of the songs recommended by the people here so far, and is a great collection. After that, I'd actually work backwards until you don't "feel it" anymore. After that I'd move forward until you don't "feel it" anymore. If you're really a hard rock guy, that could even be as early as the first album after Moving Pictures as they went into full-on synth mode at that time. If the synths don't do it for you, skip ahead to Counterparts (their return to a harder sound). And then keep moving forward. In the first stage of "moving backwards" from Exit Stage Left, I would make sure you get the live album "All the World's A Stage". At no other time was the band as energized, exciting, and dangerous as they were on that record. It is easily my favorite live recording. But like Exit Stage Left, it is also a good summary of the four studio albums which preceded it.4 points

Plus the album artwork just doesn't have the same impact at 5 inches as it does at 12. And yes, I'm sure that could be misconstrued.3 points

"walk into store" LOL that was a good one. The first five options are pretty obsolete now days. So I have heard..... :codger: man I miss those days. Not to go all "old folks" on everyone but that was a huge part of the experience indeed..... Yup. Walking in, spending a half hour or hour digging around through all the bins. Sometimes buying an album just based on the cover (and if you were really lucky it would be good!). Sometimes talking with the staff, if they had similar tastes, and then they might turn you on to a band you didn't previously know about. Then you take your album home and run your fingernail down the opening to tear the plastic, and hope you didn't get a papercut under the nail as you did that. Take the record out, see if there were any notes scratched into the vinyl around the label. Look at the album artwork, photos, read the lyrics...3 points

1. Walk into store 2. Pick up an album 3. Look at album cover 4. Read title of album 5. Flip album over 6. Read the track listing (optional - start at 2 again or go directly to 7) 7. If it interests you pay for it (or not - your preference) 8. Leave store 9. Listen to album 10. Repeat 9 Just find what you like on your own. It's your journey and your discovery. Don't listen to what people tell you to listen to. Go through their catalog at your own pace and discover what you like.3 points

I don't want to ruin Lost In Xanadu's reputation in any way but he is a super nice caring dude. Him being concerned with my health when most of "that" appears to have blown over is very touching. Thanks my friend for your continued concern and caring.... :cheers:3 points

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/713FDVjpbqL._SL1500_.jpg Pink Floyd Share Cover Art + Full Details of New ‘Endless River’ Album Calling it a "return to the creative principles" of ‘Echoes,’ ‘Shine On You Crazy Diamond,’ and ‘Animals,’ Pink Floyd have revealed the cover art, track listing, and release date for their new album ‘The Endless River.’ Culled from the same 1993 sessions that produced 1994′s ‘The Division Bell,’ the 18-track ‘Endless River’ is shaped from a period that found Floyd members David Gilmour, Nick Mason and Richard Wright jamming on "more than a hundred pieces of music" and then finishing the arrangements with producer Bob Ezrin and a group of studio vets that included keyboard player Jon Carin, bassist Guy Pratt, and percussionist Gary Wallis. Newly augmented by additional overdubs from Gilmour and Mason, as well as archival performances from Wright, who died in 2008, the end result is a hybrid collection of new Pink Floyd music that Gilmour says "feels right" in 2014. "‘The Endless River’ has as its starting point the music that came from the 1993 ‘Division Bell’ sessions. We listened to over 20 hours of the three of us playing together and selected the music we wanted to work on for the new album," he explained. "Over the last year we’ve added new parts, re-recorded others and generally harnessed studio technology to make a 21st century Pink Floyd album. With Rick gone, and with him the chance of ever doing it again, it feels right that these revisited and reworked tracks should be made available as part of our repertoire." Gilmour and Mason discussed the project for a cover story in the Nov. 2014 issue of Uncut, revealing that the album includes some organ work recorded by Wright in 1969, boasts an overall atmospheric tone, and was partially shaped by input from Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, who listened to the tapes and offered his thoughts at Gilmour’s request. The interview also includes lyrics from the sole vocal track on ‘The Endless River,’ titled ‘Louder Than Words,’ which offers a poignant overview of the band’s tumultuous history with lines like "We bitch and we fight / But this thing that we do / It’s louder than words / The sum of our parts / The beat of our hearts / It’s louder than words." Promising "mellifluous keyboards, jazz-tinged drums, musique concrete, ethereal vocals, and distinctive, emotional lead guitar," ‘The Endless River’ is due for release on Nov. 10. Pink Floyd, ‘The Endless River’ Track Listing ‘Things Left Unsaid’ ‘It’s What We Do’ ‘Ebb and Flow’ ‘Sum’ ‘Skins’ ‘Unsung’ ‘Anisina’ ‘The Lost Art of Conversation’ ‘On Noodle Street’ ‘Night Light’ ‘Allons-y (1)’ ‘Autumn’68′ ‘Allons-y (2)’ ‘Talkin’ Hawkin" ‘Calling’ ‘Eyes to Pearls’ ‘Surfacing’ ‘Louder Than Words’3 points
