Rush is done and they won't continue without Neil, no one could replace Neil anyways plus it wouldn't be Rush anymore, it would be shitty mush.

How can you be so certain it’d be shitty mush? The music hasn’t been made. It almost certainly won’t be made either but still, Geddy and Alex have made some good music without Neil...in a band called Rush.

Rush's first album didn't have Neil on it, and 85% of the album was shitty mush for me mate.

Fair enough. So, 15% of the debut album isn’t bad or even very good, yeah? And no Neil around. So, you admit they can make good music without him.

I only like 40% of Bones and 30% of Snakes and Neil’s creative stamp is all over those albums.

They could easily replace Neil if they wanted to. People thought Sabbath couldn't go on without Ozzy but they got Dio and released some excellent stuff. Judas Priest have released two great albums in recent years without founding guitarist KK Downing. There are plenty of other examples of bands replacing someone who is supposedly irreplaceable and being just fine.

I don't think Geddy and Alex would continue the band without Neil. There was always an all or nothing mentality with those three. If all three can't agree then it doesn't happen. That's why they're done as a band. Neil won't budge on his retirement. I'm all for Geddy and Alex getting a drummer and maybe a singer and starting a completely new band though.

Agreed. That's more or less what I meant starting this thread. Not "Rush's new drummer" but "who would you like to see Ged and Alex play with"

I'm not in total denial so I believe that Rush is over and we won't see Neil, Alex, and Geddy together again. I also believe that Ged and Alex wouldn't go onstage as Rush without Neil at this point.

However, I thought it would be fun to share who you think could work as a replacement for Neil in a hypothetical situation.

I read that someone in an interview asked Dave Grohl which is about the worst thing I can imagine.

My favourite drummer (yes, more than Neil) is Dale Crover from the Melvins. I don't think his style would work at all with most Rush songs but I would love to see them try hahaha.

wow, that makes 2 of us on this website who like melvins

I think you'll see after some time here that squeaky clean sterility is all most people here want in music, unfortunately

Glad to hear! I enjoy Rush's heavier moments and think Dale could squeeze it out of them. That guy's insane and I'm confident he can secretly play just as fast as Neil but doesn't because the Melvins aren't a thrash band haha

yeah, dale comes from a pretty standard background for a guy his age - maiden, priest, who, sabbath, etc. I'm sure he knows some rush tunes. the melvins recruited him from a maiden tribute outfit in like, 83/84

Not just "mush", but "shitty mush"!

If you say "shitty mush" out loud, it sounds like some place in New Brunswick.

The first person that comes to mind is Chuck Biscuits. A lot of people on here might not be familiar with him but his influences come from the right pedigree and...he's Canadian. He's a ferocious, technically precise, power hitter.

This is all hypothetical of course (especially since like Neil he's also retired from the music biz, ha).

BTW, I love the Melvins up to Stoner Witch but I met/interviewed them (Dale and Buzzo) for college radio in '94 and they were the most humorless (unless they were laughing at their own jokes), corrosively sarcastic, humble bragging assholes I have ever met in my life and I can usually find the good in everyone (maybe I caught them on a bad day, ha. But I've heard other stories and I don't think so unfortunately). Maybe they've chilled out over the years. Good luck if you ever meet them!

And you're right, Dave Grohl is just a plain 'no'.
