Rod in Toronto
We were in a playground yesterday just outside Stella's school, and she and a friend were fascinated with a squirrel. Those little things are all over the place here, but they're quite rare in Brazil, so she's usually enthralled by them. But as both kids were getting closer and closer, I think it felt scared and cornered, and jumped out of where it was, scratching Stella in her forehead, nose and ear...I was trying to take a cool picture of her and the squirrel, and both me and my wife froze after the attack!!!! We'll see a doctor today, but everyone we told about this never heard of squirrels attacking humans here. Googling it I found that it can happen, but it's not that common. Has anyone heard anything about similar attacks?

Entre_Perpetuo
I live in an area where squirrels aren't uncommon, and they're everywhere on my campus. I've always been given the idea that you shouldn't mess with squirrels, especially ones that are used to being around humans. They don't mess around and they will attack you if you don't mind your own business. Sorry to hear about your attack, hope Stella feels better soon. :(
Ancient Ways
Last month we were at Busch gardens and we sat down on a park bench and a squirrel walked right up and climbed up my daughters jeans into her lap looking for food. If left after it found none. Clearly, that squirrel was used to being fed by people. Most just run away when they see us.
J2112YYZ
Squirrels are all over the place here. But I can't say I've ever seen one attack somebody. They're usually just looking for food. If they see a person doesn't have anything they move on. But they are animals and have that instinct to defend if they feel threatened, so I'm sure being aggressive is not out of the question. I wonder if they had a nest close by with babies in it and felt like it needed to be defended.

Lucas
Rod, I am sorry to hear this - I'm sure your daughter will be fine, but it was probably scary for her ( and you and your wife ! ) There are squirrels all over where I am, but I've never had an encounter like the one you mentioned .. Most of the time they will run if a person gets within 50 feet
Rod in Toronto
She saw a doctor todat and she's ok, there's no risk of rabies or anything like that. But she says she wants to bring her knife to the playground to defend herself from squirrels next time...hehehe.

OldRUSHfan
Both of my kids have been to Ted Nugent's Kamp for Kids. They learn to shoot guns, bow hunt and other survival stuff. On our way home from picking the daughter up and pulling into our parking space, a squirrel started to cavort in the courtyard, and my daughter said, "Oooh! Look, there's a squirrel! CAN I KILL IT DAD?" That's my girl!http://i.imgur.com/ka2UjaO.gif

vaportrailer
I don't know if other places have them, but Ontario has big black squirrels and big grey squirrels. These things are huge and are more like rats than your average red squirrel. I hope it wasn't one of these! That would be intense!I've never heard of them attacking anyone before, but wise to have your daughter checked for rabies and other nasties. Principled Man
Squirrels will attack if they feel threatened. Long, long ago, my next-door neighbor found a young squirrel, which she adopted. The squirrel found its way onto our roof via a nearby tree branch, so my dad and I went up to try to get it back onto the branch. We got it cornered, and you can guess the rest. It made a mad dash between us, my dad grabbed it, and it made a meal out of his thumb! :o I just yelled, "Throw it on the ground!" We were only about 6-8 feet over my neighbor's side yard, so the little darlin wasn't hurt. :D :D
OldRUSHfan
Yes, the little buggers really know the Arbor Highway, don't they. when the trees in the next property were still up, they could literally go from our building at the back of the parking lot to Clark st. at the end of our driveway. Part of the reason I was so pissed when they cut those trees down at the end of 2014.http://i.imgur.com/HohnDUl.gif?

Looks like a black squirrel too. I hadn't had much experience with them until I moved North that Year...they can be vicious if cornered. http://i.imgur.com/p7QUnpz.jpghttp://i.imgur.com/ouUEgPR.jpg
