It's an excellent album. I won't argue with anyone who considers it a masterpiece. But, if this it is a masterpiece what are the four or five albums that followed it considered? Super Deluxe Masterpieces?

2112: Masterpiece

AFTK: Sacrosanct Magnum Opus

Hems: Great

PeW: Super Mega Masterpiece

MP: Super Masterpiece

Signals: Masterpiece

;)

I find your assessment inconsistent. There a several duds on 2112.

I didn't hear any duds when I bought my first Rush album on my dad's recommendation 6 years ago. Just songs ranging from merely good to life-changing / mind-blowing.

Cool. I am not trying to persuade. I just find some of the album corny and some of the songs misfires. Overall, it's an excellent album, but I find much more to appreciate on the following albums. More focused. More confident. Better songs.

There are the songs, and then there is what went into those songs and making that album

It's not only a masterpiece musically, it is a landmark, and a defining moment in Rush's career in which they flipped the middle finger to not just the record execs who wanted something more sellable, but also to the peace and love commune mentality of music scene and pushed for being yourself, the individual, and rejecting the mass mentality ..

I certainly hope that aspect will remain timeless

Tears, Bangkok, Something For Nothing all could slip into my Rush Top10 on any given day ... 2112 will always be there .. Lessons and Twilight Zone aren't far behind

There aren't too many albums that have this kind of history and impact in my book

And love her or hate her, Ayn Rand was introduced to an entirely new generation and audience ..

I hit it off with this song at first hearing.

I consider every album from Caress of Steel to Signals a masterpiece. They will remain masterpieces within my lifetime, for me. What happens after that I don't really care.

Honestly, I'd agree if I wasn't a little down on Hems, but I know it's beloved by many, so the streaks pretty much unbroken from 75 to 82

I know. I try so hard for the kids' sake to try to find something to enjoy in the music they listen to. Sometimes I can find something salvageable - a hook, a boppable beat. But there is virtually no craft. The emotion is completely taken from the contemporary hiphop playbook, the breathy vocals, the elisions of consonants ("ge'in'). A lot of it is repetitive as f**k. I have never heard anything that so completely takes you over and gets you in the gut and just stops you in your tracks like 70s Rush. It's why I joined this damned forum.

This album is a little too loud, too explosive and too kick ass for some RUSH fans who prefer the safer option of albums like Signals with it's much more muted approach.

Currently...

1. MP

2. PeW

3. Hemis

4. AFTK

5. 2112

6. Sigs

Everything on those 6 albums range from “good” to “perfect”. Would that make all 6 of them timeless masterpieces?

Yeah, and don't get me wrong I like Signals a lot but the other five albums listed there are clearly above it. And for me CoS and FBN are above it too,

These days I’d probably put FBN at #7. Bastille, By-Tor, and Anthem are more enjoyable to the still very enjoyable mid-80s stuff.

[edited to add: clearly I know Bastille is off CoS, I just added it because it’s so much more kick ass than anything in the mid-80s]

What's disjointed about it?

The title track itself doesn't flow well for me, neither do Cinderella Man or Cygnus Book 1. And then there's Madrigal...

It just falls flat as an album for me, especially when it falls between Caress, 2112, Hemi and PWaves.

Not for me! All those songs are classics, right from the first time I heard the album!

It's one album I actually didn't hear in full till much later, so I wasn't a part of that initial hype. I'm a huge Tull fan, and they do such a good job with the kind of music that RUSH were trying to emulate with Kings that the album just misses the mark for me...like they were trying too hard to be a YES/Tull hybrid. Hemi moved them back toward the RUSH I enjoy, PWaves even more.
