Judging an Album by its Cover

I was just discussing this with BlueJ...

A few years back I was in a record store and I saw the album, "Satellite Rides" by Old 97s.

Something about the cover just caught my eye...kind of a retro 60s vibe.

My friend, Wayne, who worked at the store walked up and said, "you'll like them, that's your type of music".

I bought the album and could not stop playing it.

They quickly became one of my favourite bands and I bought all of their previous albums.

It was a great find just by looking at the cover.

I saw that they are playing in Louisville, KY, in about a month. It's only about two hours away for me...

I'm seeing them in NYC in May.

What venue are they playing there?

Irving Plaza...an old ballroom in a great neighbourhood. We always go in early and have a bit to eat and a couple of drinks at Pete's Tavern two blocks away. (Its where O'Henry used to write).

To be frank, I think the majority of album covers are forgettable. Just thinking about the Rush covers, this thought seems correct. Most are forgettable (though not necessarily bad) with the cover of Snakes & Arrows being the worst (terrible).

Yeah, I don't like their modern-era covers. Unaesthetic.

But I think part of what makes an album cover great is that it's unobtrusive; it fades into the music, in a sense, and becomes part of the image. Thinking of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, I can't envision the album without the prism and the rainbow thingy, but in and of itself it's nothing particularly groundbreaking. Likewise I can' think of Kiss albums being anything other than what they are.

I like many of the Rush covers but typography kills me, especially when it comes to Caress of Steel. I wish more bands would take the nameless cover approach unless the artist's name being in bold loud print on the cover adds to the cover art in some way.

I used the word cover a lot.

I think the last album I bought because of the cover was Le Petit Mort by James. Class!

RUSHHEAD Earl bought this album for the cover.

In fact, he bought 5 dozen copies!

Pretty sure he hasn't listened to it yet either.

Mint. Condition.

This is a great band, with a great album cover - the music is pretty much exactly like the cover

I just typed that quickly. Then funnily, right after I wrote it, I thought there was a good chance that I wasn't too far off.

Even today the artwork plays some part in what I buy. Like when the latest Mastodon album came out, I knew I had to have that sweet quadruple gatefold version.

Does that Mastodon album come with a couple hits of LSD? :P

 I did buy an album once that came with a blotter sheet of the cover. The last Toxic Holocaust album.

I bought this album because of the astonishing artwork. I have yet to see any album come even close.

It's the Pentateuch of the of the Cosmogony featuring Dave Greenslade and Phil Collins.

It's a double album of 70's instrumental Prog Rock. The artwork is by Patrick Woodroofe and tells the story of the album in words and pictures.

It comes housed in a album sized hardback book. Check out the slide-show which shows just some of the astonishing artwork found within.

Can anyone match this?

I'm familiar with Irving Plaza, yes. ;) (even though I've never been there)...

I wasn't aware of the O. Henry connection to Pete's, though. Cool!

The Steel Panther model looks like Salma Hayek in From Dusk Til Dawn. I didn't think anyone could look like that, not even close. I now have to re-evaluate everything I've come to believe.
