Which Decade?

  1. 1. Which decade is Permanent Waves from?

Here is a thought:

It was released on 1.1.80.

But isn't 80 technically a 10? The ending year of the seventies?

Do we have a 0 finger I somehow have been overlooking for 25 years? Have I mistakenly always assumed 1 is a start?

Hypothetical question: a baby is born on Jan 1, 1980. Is it a 70's baby, or an 80's baby?

Jan 1st 1980 is just when the parents introduced the baby to the rest of the world. The baby had already been born before that in the recording studio...ew...now I've got a weird image in my head

If we say it was 70s then we have to say Rush debut was 1973, or 1972 because thats when it was recorded. And every album that was released, might have been recorded the year before so MP would be 19, thats why i think when it was released should be considered what the album is.

Moving Pictures is the eighth studio album by Canadian rock band Rush. It was recorded and mixed from October to November 1980 at Le Studio located in Morin Heights, Quebec, Canada, and released on February 12, 1981.

I agree with you that an album recorded in the 80s and released in the 80s is an 80s album. Although I believe that the 80s started in 1982, from a musical zeitgeist point of view.

I agree with what you say also, it sounds like a 70s album, but The Cars first 2 albums sounded very 80s to me, but were in the 70s

I just say it's.......an album. an awesome album. shut up and enjoy it.

Exactly, it doesnt really matter in the greater scheme of things, 80's album, theres nothing to really even discuss, 80's album, really it makes no difference, 80's album. I am still going to bed tonight, with Marissa Miller knowing that Permanent Waves, 80's album, is just really a stunning piece of work, really long legs, and I can also rest comfortably on my 2000 thread count sheets.

No.

I wouldn't worry about it, 70s is winning the poll currently (barely). I'm not sure how a poll gets closed, but if 70s is the winner in the end, 1-0-0-1-0-0-1 will see to it that no one EVER refers to this album as being an 80s album ever again

My daughter was born sept 2000. She was made in 1999 but released in 2000. 00s baby.

You can't compare a baby to a piece of music. Music is all about how it's made, or should be. Plus it's not in a womb until it's released. It's out there being played.

Yeah right. I will go to my grave saying this and it is a fact.

You're absolutely right; you will go to your TRF grave as 73 honorably banishes you

©1980. To go off anything else, no matter what the justification, implies that the year associated with almost any book, movie, album etc... is incorrect.

It's not about "the year associated" with Permanent Waves; it's a simple matter of when the album was created

No, it's the year of release, nobody questions that Permanent Waves was released in 1980, because that's a fact. People question whether the music "belongs" to the same year simply because it was publicized on record then. I mean, what if an album gets recorded in, say, 1975 but (for some reason) only gets released 10 years later in 1985? Does it belong to the 80s then just because it was shelved until then? Not really. It would be a product of the '70s because that's when it was created. Just like Permanent Waves.

In the end though, this is really quite pointless.
