And another happy birthday...to Hold Your Fire

Twenty-eight years ago today came this art rock gem. I still say it's an underrated album, even though I've been pleased to see it praised by quite a few people at TRF...

It still sees its fair share of disrespect, albeit in good fun (cue goose and his collection of Casios), but I couldn't do without this album. Musically and lyrically, a very high point of their career.

Happy Birthday to the first 8...

That's about what I expected from you... :eyeroll:

Come on, Narps- everybody deserves a happy birthday.

Just glad I didn't disappoint... :)

Great album!

I remember the day it came out.

A guy who played guitar in our band worked at a record store and gave it to me along with a huge poster of the album cover.

I just loved it and was in love with Aimee Mann at the time, so that was a welcome bonus.

(Her voice is so delicate and beautiful and strong all at the same time).

I love the multiple meanings of the title.

"Hold Your Fire", being light in a dark place for others to see and find hope.

"Hold Your Fire", cease shooting at others with weapons, words or anything that can bring harm to another.

I'm sure there are other meanings as well, but that's what it's meant to me.

Great remembrance, my friend.

I also remember the day it came out- I remember riding my bike to the record store to buy it. It was the first Rush album that I bought on my own (rather than listening to the copy that my big brother bought for himself, and then handed down to me).

As for Aimee Mann, here's something you'll appreciate- I saw her live one time, at Nautica Stage in Cleveland. She was opening for Bob Dylan! :)

I saw Til Tuesay when "Voices Carry" was at the top of the charts.

She's such a great singer-songwriter.

Like many great artists of the 80s, her big hit was a blessing and a curse.

She was a good performer and had a good band, when I saw her...it was 1996. I don't know if she's been making music for some time now, still, or not.

HYF is one of five Rush albums I think are absolutely, unchangeably perfect.

When someone doesn't care for a Queen album, that's showing disrespect?

Wait until I tell the Bon Jovi haters that.

Corrected mwahahahaha!

Oh dear. I think I'll just pull up a lawn chair and watch this from the sidelines today. Segue is on fire.

No, that's not accurate; that wasn't what I meant, in saying that.

Calling it Hold Your Nose (which I've seen here)...that qualifies.

Agreed!

I think the best thing to do is lead by example. My Aim is to be tactful about things I dislike here, because I worry I ruffled feathers a few weeks back, because a lot of nuance in conversation is lost in text.

I'm reminded why I don't care for the album now that I am listening to it again. I find the songs too flimsy and superficial for my taste in music.

At least you revisit it. Whenever I hear of a fan of a band proclaiming "I hate such and such" only to reveal they played it once thirty years ago, I have to roll my eyes. I still don't like Snakes And Arrows, but I revisit it from time to time.

I listen again from time to time because what I disliked yesterday might have grown on me in time. After what I went through with Snakes, anything and everything is possible. :)

This. It's such a wimpy sounding album. I don't know if it's the production or the music to blame. The songs all sound kind of the same to me and aren't very interesting at all. I think I must go opposite of Mick by declaring it my 2nd least favorite album.
