Day of Light
i never understood the dream theatre/Rush comparison. I just don't hear it. Pretty much all the band members cite Rush as an inspiration. Petrucci, Myung and Portnoy were huge Rush fanboys. So I don't think it's got much to do with direct similarity, but I do think Dream Theater does sound like Rush when considering their riffs. Images and Words in particular has a... cheerful? sound that I feel is very particular to Rush--both bands used happy, but complex, tunes with serious lyrics because nobody else really did it, so Rush and DT have an uplifting quality that does make them similar to my ears. rugen
I think someone has mentioned Budgie. There's a influence from the Rush first period, good band!
AnEggplant
Not to sound so predictable but there really is no other band like Rush. They have covered so many different styles and sounds throughout their career it's impossible to believe that another band has accomplished that kind of sonic range. Even other prog bands I love like Tool or PT, unfortunately most of their offerings sound a lot alike. They find a good formula and they stick with it. Rush, for whatever reason, never did that. For better or worse, based on your own ears, they have never made the same album twice. Hell they often can't even make the same sounding verse twice. Truly a unique and one of a kind act. I'm happy to say I love their music. Truth bomb right here.
Ancient Ways
A lot of bands write longer, musically complicated pieces with lyrics that cover a lot of subjects. Now, find one that also has the sense of melody and songwriting Rush has and let me know, Rush satisfies the prog nuts and people who just like interesting music simultaneously. I know of no one else that does this.

I still enjoy the recent years music but my prog appetite is not satisfy in the recent years. I wish they could do another more complex album before the end of it all, but i don't think it would happen.

toymaker
Sometimes I wonder if Rothery is a Lifeson fan - he has some interesting, Lifesonesque guitar bits from time to time. I guess another question could be, which musicians if they formed a group together could sound the most like Rush.
