Blue J
We all gather around to see your initial reaction to this work of genius! Â Well, I think it's very, very good. And I hope that doesn't sound underwhelming to all of you. I think some of it is really excellent. I think it may need a few more listens to really sink in, as I know it's a concept album, and there's an intricate story behind it all. I think it will come together as a whole for me after some more listens. But yes, it's a fantastic record. I love I'm One, Helpless Dancer, 5:15 (which I had heard, but I didn't remember that that song was what it was until I heard the horn lead line), and the final three- Doctor Jimmy->The Rock->Love Reign O'er Me. Great stuff.

It does take repeated listings to really sink in.

Lorraine
I wonder too if it was released today for the first time how it would be received? The album, at least to me, is timeless.

I was wondering that myself when we started talking about this album. Kind of hard to imagine listening to it with new ears so to speak. Especially since so many of us were young we first heard it. Probably around Jimmy's age I would guess, or maybe a bit younger.

Living through that period of love can never be captured again, but it will always exist in my memories. So yes, the memories are part of its charm for this old f@rt also.. (hope this makes sense)

Lorraine
Those were truly the days. Sometimes I miss them; other times I am glad they are gone. More so the former than the latter.
The Cat 3
Those were truly the days. Sometimes I miss them; other times I am glad they are gone. More so the former than the latter. I have so many great memories attached to this album.  I am happy to say that I have grown up and, God willing, I will grow old with it as well.  Those were the days, indeed...but, I anticipate better ones yet to come! :)
Lorraine
Today I had it in my mind that I should listen to this, but.... Maybe a song or two.... It still, after over forty years, takes a toll on me. Isn't that amazing?

I haven't been to this thread for ages...did I or anyone mention before about that Quad album doc? Not sure if you've seen (could be up on YT) but it's essential viewing! From what I remember loads of details about the making of the album/concept/artwork/Pete interviews etc...I saw it on TV a while back - a keeper! It's prob a bonus on some DVD by now.
Lorraine
I listened to the entire album. For me to do that, all conditions have to be right, and that is not necessarily a good thing. Listening to it takes a lot out of me. Poor Moonie. Poor Roger reduced these days to taking a back seat to the equally yesterday Mood Blues on one of their fan cruises. That's quite nosedive to take. Poor John. Poor Pete, the crazy musical genius, who probably wonders why he could never write another Quadrophenia and how he ever wrote the first one. I'd write a lot more, but the trust level here isn't what it once was. If you find out where I can get it, please let me know. I never saw it, and I would love to see it. They don't make albums like this anymore. I fear those days are long, long, long gone. Lorraine
There is only one way to listen to it - on vinyl. A cd ruins the flow of songs one into the other.

Don't get me wrong about Tommy, it's very VERY good of course, but Quadrophenia - YE GODS!! It has so much going on, its a dizzying array of content, otherworldly, and musically just nails it. Well it's how I see it and I guess you do as well. Sorry I can't find it on YT but you may be able to find it on DVD through Amazon etc...here is a pathetic snippet of it that even made the cinemas. I never got to see this...BUT i did get to witness The Kids are Alright at a special screening thankfully, fricking amazing on the big screen and sounded great!  http://youtu.be/huNzoBhMtG0

When they are broken up, even if it is only a few seconds, something is lacking. I don't have the vinyl anymore either. Even if I did, I'd have nothing to play it on. But, I am happy to even have the album at all. :)
