101 Best Written TV Series Of All Time

Friends was a great show. So is Big Bang. I still can't decide which one is better. Both shows are way better than Seinfeld. Don't get me wrong, I think Seinfeld was a decent show, and I've seen my fair share of episodes, but it's hard for me to love a show where every character is fairly despicable. I enjoy shows where you can actually care about at least some characters.

Other really well written comedies off the top of my head - Mash obviously, Taxi, Family Ties, Louie, The Wonder Years, Sex and the City, Cheers, Scrubs, etc.

I think there are a LOT of really well written tv shows on that list. Not all of them belong there, and there are certainly plenty I've never seen, but there are a lot of great ones.

I'm continually amazed on TRF by how almost anything that's really popular is deeply hated by so many.

Bullshit. I really enjoyed those top 4 shows listed...and they were insanely popular. And I like a lot of those shows on there that are also very popular. If FRIENDS had been unpopular I would've still hated that piece of crap. It just so happened that it was very well-received

it's a lot more than just friends i'm speaking of, but no biggie. people here love to hate so many things that are very popular. i think it's a rush-fan rebel thing.

So, you can like a show because of x, y, and z but others can't dislike that show for those same items?! We're likely disliking it because it's popular? Dude. It's not a Rush-fan rebel thang. I truly truly with all my heart hate various sitcoms due to the actors, style of humor, stories, etc.

Aside: I would've paid good money to dropkick half of the actors (or characters if you want to take that angle) in FRIENDS

It's not just the hate for things like Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Survivor, reality TV in general, Twilight, The Hunger Games, the Academy Awards, etc., but the intense seething beyond contempt hatred people have for so many popular things here. Just look at your wording above - "I truly truly with all my heart hate." I don't even think I hate Vapor Trails THAT much.

Man, you're stubborn as hell. I was making a point that my dislike towards a show came from ME and not any ridiculous idea of a rebellious streak or popularity thang. And nobody has ripped anything as much as you have ripped VT

maybe people just have different opinions, or they hate shit that sucks, I dunno. I don't like friends, the big bang theory, survivor, hardly any reality tv (outside of lizard lick towing, different history 2 shows (history channel 1 sucks balls cause its just pawn stars now), kitchen nightmares, some travel channel shows), twilight sucks (both movies and the bit of book one I read), dunno about the hunger games but from my own experience just about the only contemporary best-selling fiction writer I like is stephen king, so I bet I wouldn't like the series but who knows? and the academy awards are just boring as shit and predictable

I'm quite a rebel ;)

that's different, abba sucks. :P

seriously though - most people who don't like them are nicer than me and don't go to the thread and say so... but i bet if you had a legitimate poll among rush fans, you wouldn't exactly find abba being very popular.

Fine, you and others just have a dripping hatred a lot of popular things with seething sneering contempt for other reasons. The reasons aren't that important to me - I was just theorizing why it is that way trying to find a way to explain it.

And hating VT is not hating something that is popular. The album is decidedly UNpopular among Rush fans relative to the rest of their albums. Of course, for here on this board of hardcore Rush fans, many of whom would love an album of Geddy & Alex farting, some people love it, but just go to rateyourmusic.com and you'll see what it's really thought of. My opinions on Rush albums are actually pretty much spot on with what the general populace thinks (not like that matters that much, but it's worth mentioning) other than I think Rush and Hold Your Fire are always seriously underrated.

And after all this time you continuing to call me stubborn as if you're surprised is... well... stubborn. ;)

Again you're on about popular or unpopular. It's obvious that YOU care about popularity more than me or others. If VT had been really successful and as popular as MP you still would've disliked it, right? What don't you understand about simply disliking something regardless of popularity? Surely, you do it all the time

I also dislike the beloved king of cult sitcoms Arrested Development. Like Friends I simply do not think it is funny.

Nonsense. You told the lot of us that we don't like a show because it's popular. Then you said you didn't care about the reason. Yet you can like or dislike something for whatever reason you like. And read again, where did I congratulate anybody for disliking whatever? And how the hell is this "be cool or be cast out" when you are theorizing why I dislike something? You often have issues when someone dislikes whatever you like and come up with various theories about why those people think that way. And seriously, how can you rant about contempt when (again) you've gone on for YEARS about your contempt for VT? I say (OBVIOUSLY jokingly) that I want to dropkick half the cast of FRIENDS and you act like I actually did that.

Johnny, your a good man trying to be reasonable with goobers circular logic. No one can bring sneering derision, hatred and cynicism into a discussion but goobs. It confounds him if anyone else tries that. That's the alternate reality of the rushgoober. :chickendance:

Surely, you do it all the time

it's not "simply disliking," it's the level of intense hatred you and many others have towards these things like you demonstrated above. there are tons of thread ideas i've had over the years on many of the more popular culture things i enjoy that i never write because the sneering derision, hatred and cynicism is so overwhelming that it's just not worth it. what's the point when you get 2 people who agree with you and legitimately want to talk about it, and 50 who tell you what worthless shit it is and laugh and congratulate each other about who can mock it with the most sneering contempt? maybe it doesn't have to do with what's popular, but what's cool. so many things that aren't deemed cool are just massacred. i guess it's be cool or be cast out.

I say (OBVIOUSLY jokingly) that I want to dropkick half the cast of FRIENDS and you act like I actually did that.

there's nothing i can say that's going to make you understand i guess. enjoy the hate.

Yeah, I give up too goobs. I was wrong for disliking such a popular show. You have shown me the way. I especially loved that episode with Michael Rappaport as the massage therapist's cop bf. I just couldn't stop laughing when Joey jumped over his buddy to protect him from gunfire...but, of course, we all know that it wasn't gunfire but a car backfiring AND Joey wasn't protecting his buddy...he was protecting his sandwich!! Ah, that Joey. What a card!! Comedic gold. How adorable everyone was in that episode. I love them all and their wonderful personalties. I want to be their real life friend.

Ooh-ohh-ooooh! Mr. Kotter, I mean, rushgoober. Can I copy and paste your above reply as a response to your future Rush/Geddy's vocals/etc trolling? What's that? No? Only you know what should be profusely hated? What's that? If I hate something you love, I must be coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs? Oh, alright. Shucks.

Another episode I recall almost hourly (because it's so hilarious) is the one where Ross dates some very attractive girl who happens to be a total slob. The mortified look on his face when his hand touches some unknown grotesque substance under a sofa pillow while they're making out is priceless. He was my favorite FRIENDS character of all. With his droopy look and demeanor how can anyone NOT find him charming? He may be the greatest small AND big screen character AND actor in the history of MOVING pictures.

Too stoned to get off the couch in the mid-90s while flatmates treated that show as if it were the f***ing SuperBowl....

"Tonight is Friends night, yay!"

"Yeah, I wonder what will happen to Monica?"

"Would you two shut up and bust out with the pipe already?"

Yeah, I didn't like that show but I did like Seinfeld, Wings, and pot. So yeah, I actually did watch several episodes (maybe 12-15). That's how I know I dislike it...it wasn't a one-off viewing

House should be way higher. That show was written fantastically. Sex and the City made the list? Really? I'm pleased Battlestar Galactica made the list as in my opinion that transcends the genre of science fiction and is one of the greatest of the 21st century.

I agree that Battlestar Galactica (not the 70's version, obviously :P ) transcends the genre. I think of it as THE science-fiction show for people who don't like science-fiction.
